Which one do you pick?
I have looked at SA, CD, Para Ord, and Auto Ord.
Im leaning heavily towards Springfield, but I thought I would check w/ the Firearm toting devils of Jerzee.

Get a Springfield if you're going new, or keep an eye out for a good used Colt or Springfield. Stay away from new Kimbers, they have switched to an external extractor that isn't doing so hot from what I'm told. In addition to that, they use a lot of Metal Injection Molded parts which are prone to breakage. Springfield uses MIM too, but doesn't charge as much for them. It wouldn't be difficult to replace those parts either, at a reasonable cost. I've been researching 1911's for the last two years and have pretty much settled on Springfield since they're the only factory left making quality 1911's without useless and problematic internal firing pin safeties. John Browning didn't seem to think the things were necessary and I don't either. Check out www.1911forum.com/forums if you want to do more research. They seem like a pretty decent group of guys and there's a hell of a lot of info there. Best of luck! If you're anywhere near Erie PA visit the Erie Sport Store on Peach street and I'll hook you up with a good gun. We've got a great selection of 1911's at the moment.

THX all, I think alot of Kimber, Les Baer and a few others, but they rarely if ever come in the 500 range.
The SA mil spec seems like a good starter as my first 45. Thx for the link RR, Ill spend some time over there.
I vote Springfield. Be sure to post some pics when you get it. :punish:

Springfiled 1911A1 in stainless steel, under $500 and great platform for future upgrades.

So this is what I ended up w/.
The SA Mil Spec bottom of the line 1911.
Got it and an extra wilson combat 8 rd mag and the regular 7 rd mag it comes w/ for just over 400. Very happy w/ the deal.
Thought I would throw in the last knife I got as well. Lee Williams SR-1 w/ Rhino Flipper.
They make a lovely pair and I havent been w/o either since I got them.
