What the fuck just happened ?
It grew in Judy's flower garden .........one stalk ........ one ear.
We figured it had to come from the bird feeder via squirrel , bird or ????
I am leaning towards corn - squirrel shit hybrid , but it is definately some kind of mutant.
G.M.O. gone bad ?
We threw it in the trash and I am afraid it is gonna come out of there tonight and do things to me.
Unpleasant things.

That's corn smut - I'm pretty sure. In some countries they cook that like mushrooms ... it spreads from spores in the ground.
Nice weird pics ! :ssmile:

I've alays called it corn mold and yes it spreads from the ground. If you were going to try to grow a few more ears next year I turn the soil this fall then place some lime on it. Once your leave fall pile them on the garden and let them sit (unless the tree has some kind of blight). then in March or so on a nice warm wekend turn it again then fertilize.
another good thing for the soil is coffee grounds, save them in aice cream bucket or something and use the around roses and tomatos

Corn-hybrid maybe, but not with squirrel-shit. I think "someone" has been whackin' off out in the garden. "Someone" with blondish hair (just look at the little tyke in the picture), and morbidly pale skin. Round up the suspects...
all da best,

I'd say you tried to mate cauliflower with corn... interesting combination. :manganr: Actually I think ded i has stated the correct answer...
Corn smut is not pornography but rather is a remarkable disease caused by the basidiomycete fungus, Ustilago maydis. The fungus overwinters as teliospores in the soil. When teliospores germinate, they produce sporidia. Sporidia usually infect actively growing tissues in buds, ears, tassels, leaves and stalks. Infections stimulate galls to form. When sporidia land on the stigma (or silk) of corn flowers, they produce hyhae that grow into the kernels, which become infected and form galls. The mycelium inside the galls eventually becomes a mass of teliospores. In its early stages, corn smut is a highly prized edible fungus, sometimes called 'the smoky maize mushroom'. Ummm... yummy! Smuts are very common on many grasses throughout the world as well as websites, but most are not as striking and as easy to see as corn smut.

I used to haul pipe (and if you don't even know what that means...ask) for several farmers. Smut was a common occurrence we saw in the field. As far as I am concerned, no big deal....although it probably does affect profitability.

The Mexicans call it Huitlacoche and say it tastes like something between black truffle and mushroom. Highly prized south of the border. Never had it myself, but I've seen it prepared (only on television).

Tt reminds me of the Elephants Man's head.
Dood it is the Corn Smut. It is considered a delicacy, a prime edible fungus.
Good stuff, I'll fried it lightly in butter then make white cheese (cream and farmer cheese is the best) omelettes with them or just scrambled eggs. We camp in Corn Country and find it all the time.
Edit: never noticed any tripendicular effects from eating this, I don't think my 'shroom guidebooks mention it

Many, many years ago I was a backyard corn farmer and occasionally I'd experience a case or two of corn smut, but NEVER anything that looked like a transitory creature from the Kurt Russell classic motion picture
THE THING!
Really, thats fucking scarry looking, I wouldn't eat it, I'd burn it or call in a priest to exorsize it. :devilzeek :bwah::bruce:

That corn be trippin' fo sho. It's seed was probably eating some other seeds in the wild bird feed sack. It is common knowledge that a bag of wild bird seed can produce some amazing...

I have seen many flowerbeds, situated under bird feeders, growing some. One lady told me she thought her mint plants produced a new, more hearty, plant. Another old dude was all paranoid and told me he thought the neighborhood kids kept planting the shit there to get him in trouble. :tinfoil:
