Is the MKIII Navy combat knife any good? A hardware store around here has one for sale and was wondering if it is a good knife? Its about 11 inches long with a 6 inch clip point blade and plastic grips and sheath.

I believe the blade is black oxide coated(for more corrosian resistance aqround salt water) 440a, although I am not positive, and the sheath is much like the M8A1's used on the M7 bayonet. Heres a link: http://www.ontarioknife.com/milissue.html

Heres a pic of the blade: http://www.ontarioknife.com/images/milissue/mk3_navy2.jpg

And here is one of the sheath: http://www.ontarioknife.com/images/milissue/MARK_3_SHEATH.jpg

Salt water environment = plastic handles and black oxide finish.

They range between $45 and $55.

Save your money and buy something nice.

Yeah, but I am looking for a beater. I figure the steel, due to it's sofness and thickness, would not shatter, the plastic sheath should not rot or cut, and the oxide coating should prevent rust. Only thing I worry about is the handle assembly and guard loosening or cracking. I have been interested in one ever since reading about them in Knife World.

They look OK but breat too easy. For under $100 I would get a Ontario RAT just to beat around.

I saw this thread and realized I had one of those knives. I had no idea where it was, so I waited until this late hour for the rafters in the garage to cool down. I found a bunch of shit I forgot I had including the knife. It has a different tip than the one in your pic, but is the same knife. Pm me your address and I will try to get it in the mail this week. It is as dull as a fool :-D , but consider it yours.

Thanks, one sterile and one "lo mu" testing marked for magnitism by the Navy. I think they only have 40% of the weight of steel. The others are sterile also.

There are a very suprising number of Sterile knives and other gear ordered by various units.

During the First Gulf War we had an order for 300 knives with absolutely no markings. Not even the sheaths were to be marked.

Mission is a very big supplier of Supplies to a number of Special units. They make great Stuff.

I wish more knives were sterile because they look so clean. What did your sterile knives look like Mike? I would like to know what knives Uncle Sam buys and make notes. I would like to see something like Cole's books but for the 90's and on up. I know that there are a few sterile guns and suppressors out there and wonder how the military keeps inventory of them. A freind in the Air Force said that his CO was pissed when they got them for that very reason.

G,

300 -- 8 inch blade Triple Hollow Ground Daggers.

One deep hollow grind on the bottom side and two small - deep hollow grinds on the top. The Tip was reinforced to penetrate soft body armor. Coke Bottle handle--no skull Crusher. Small Double Quillion Guard. Asymetrically sharpened from the Top Side Only. Pure Stickers.

I never asked Where they went or Who was going to use them.

Thanx, I sent the PM. The one you have is probably the origional one, as the newer ones have less slope to the clip (almost to being a spear point), at least from what I have read.

Thanx again

Robert

Are there any plans to make another run of these? They sound pretty cool, even if you made them unsterile.

W,

Sorry, No Pictures. That was in 1991.

I got the distinct impression that I should NOT take any pictures.

would it be hard to duplicate that knife just from memory?

i love daggers more than any other blade shape and if you could come up with something even similar i would be interested in picking one up...deep hollow grinds:love:

I'm sure I could draw it from Memory.

I'll give it a shot this weekend.

Making them is another story.
