View Full Version : Satan's Little Helper: my try in Red and Black
:devilzide I'm thinking about making something the well pimped out Pirate would be proud to have in hand while boarding another ship. Something along the lines of a wicked long dagger or short sword, A weapon that requires a name: Satan's Little Helper is the working name for this one.
Here is the first step for me:
Assembling and prepping material to make up some very different laminate...
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x45/shadetrees/jd/DSC02832.jpg
Got all sorts of reds and a few black materials together, cut them to the right size and getting them ready for epoxy. I have stacked and restacked the cloth to get to here (right to left [also; inside to outside]; an assortment of reds, a little yellow and orange, in cotton, canvas, linen, a couple patterns, one in red and black and a more colorful print, then some brown linen, basalt fiber, black linen and carbon fiber):
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x45/shadetrees/jd/DSC02835.jpg
Basically, the laminate I am working up will be black (carbon fiber) outside with the red mix on the inside.
I intend to sculpt flames in through the black outside layer to the inner reds. I also want to use the laminate to make the scabbard as well as the handles.
It shall be hot:firedevil
Yaaarrrrr...:devilzburn:

can't wait to that material when it is done
can't wait to that material when it is done
I mixed up a Strong Rum Drink earlier and pressed it up ...:chuck:
I should have sample bit to show off in the next day or two:ross:
Turned out way more colorful than I anticipated.
I dunno if I am liking it....
It won't be too bad, seeing as I won't be going way deep into the pattern, so the first pic is a little misleading:

That is a pretty cool idea. The pics seem to be that you;ve got what you need to make it work too!!

I don't have the capabilities to work up much steel I needed to start with something that was already pretty close.
I was inspired by Don Foggs Cloud Cutter. A chopping blade with a long handle
I finally found the right bit of steel to work with. A Naginata blade. :ninjapiratebattle:
A pretty nice hunk of diff hardened 5160. Does not have real active hamon, but it is there.
14" blade with a tang about the same length.
The blade needs a bit of modification to make it more stabby. I am not sure whether to go for a spear point, drop point or clip point, etc...

or
Golok on a Stick

Either way it is Wicked....:firedevil
I found an old oak banister spindle and split and cut it down to size. I put a couple pins in it and some tape to keep it together for some test whacks.
This will be an interesting tool
I am going to put a couple more pins in it , fill the handle with epoxy to hold it all together, shape it a bit, then I will put a wrap or two of kevlar sleeve, then one or two of basalt fiber or carbon fiber sleeves , then finish top and bottom with some turksheads, in paracord or perhaps leather.:ronl:

Thanks, keep tuned, I have pushed this one up on the priority list
No, did not grind it, I bought it and modified the tip somewhat. I do not yet have the capabilities to grind, much less forge and differential heat treat.
for those playing along at home...
Two layers of kevlar sleeve under one layer of basalt fiber sleeve over the core of oak
It still needs some knotty work.
wadaya think?
OH HELL YEAUHHHHH !!
Now you need some zombies to test it on.
It just needs final fitting and then epoxying on the knots and polishing the blade
I'm still not sure what to call it...Three Handed Short Sword?
:demented:
Son of Fod and I were just "testing" it and this thing is a lot of fun. :D It goes thru water filled bottles and aluminum cans with little effort. It chops wood like a golok on a stick. I can see this as a very handy addition to the camp kit. It is surprisingly tough and I see alot if utility in this thing.
Might be useful for boarding ships and clearing up between decks too :pirate: aaargh
It just needs a bit of polishing if and when we get done trying it out...we are on the lookout for some cheap pumpkins:sinister:
