After much reading here, talking with a friend and spending a lot of time at RFC, I have decided to put together an "Ultimate +"

What is this? Well, I do a lot of backpacking, hiking in rural areas, and have wanted a rifle I can take to the field with me. I like the idea of a take down rifle, and while the WildWestGuns http://www.wildwestguns.com/ (http://www.wildwestguns.com/) take down Marlin 45-70 is very high in my "must have" wish list, it's near $2000 price tag puts it a little out of reach. So I want a rifle that meets my "backpack" needs.
So, enter my buddy with his Ruger 10/22. He has an older model and has added a Butler Creek "Packer" stock and Butler Creek lightweight barrel. The .22 is a nice caliber for taking out small game and I am impressed with the weight and size. I especially the ability to pack it away.

Then, when looking for information/parts, I went over to RFC after viewing TheBadGuy's post on his 10/22 project. Then starts the madness. So my original plan to build a simple "backpack rifle" turns into a mild (yes I am in denial) obsession to build an "Ultimate". I still want the ability to take it backpacking, so decided to do both. I am building an Ultimate +. Plus being for the "backpack" option.

My plan is to get the parts, build an Ultimate, and have a second barrell and stock for backpacking. Since most of the parts are internal, or attached to the receiver I would only need to change out the barrel and stock to go from one to the other. The gun will mostly be for target shooting but I like the idea of having a "dual purpose" gun. What do you all think.

Parts so far, either in hand or on order:

Bone stock Ruger 10/22 (in hand)
Volquartsen Automatic Bolt Release (in hand)
Volquartsen Match Hammer and Sear (in hand)
Volquartsen Target Disconnector (in hand)

Replacement take down allen head bolt (in hand)
Ultimate Barrel (Volq 20in stainless w/comp ann. black)(IN HAND!!!)

Thanks for your input, and suggestions. I will post pictures when I start the conversion.

AWESOME!!!! :-D

It is addictive thats for sure. I know how you feel. When I went to RFC, I thought of nothing else until I had the project underway. I can't wait to see how it turns out. My next 10/22 will be my wife's. Stafford sales just got purple stocks in so thats what I am going to work with. But after hers is complete, I plan to make a lightweight model for hunting/backpacking

By the way, the only thing I would change on your list possibly would be

Volquartsen Recoil Buffer (new style)

I would defiantly recommend a WeaponKraft buffer. If I were you, I would look into their:

10/22 LR ULTIMATE PLUS Performance Package - With Blue Takedown Screw

http://www.weaponkraft.itgo.com/photo2.html

It has allot of the parts on your list all in one http://www.weaponkraft.itgo.com/photo2.html

It will take care of the following parts on your list:

-take down screw
-auto bolt release
-hammer
-recoil buffer

However it does look like you already have a VQ extractor so that part would be redundant

That would be great, but I already have the listed parts on order. Just waiting for everying to come it. Will get pictures, and do the running play by play on the buildup.

I bought a bushmaster bull-pup stock for my 10/22, at 26.5" fits easily into my 3 day pack and still have room for everything else.

Thanks for the link. I will definately be using that. More parts on the way. I ordered a bull barrel today. A stainless Vorq 20in annodized black.

Also ordered scope sun shroud.

Probably would have been cheaper to order a custom rifle.

Someone help me. My name is Matt and I have a serious problem. Is there a 12 step program? Anyone?

no pics for me to drool over???

I started taking pictures today. Need to set up in better spot and retake. Hopefully on line tonight with updates on the buildup. No stock until Tue and Wed, so it will be that long for "finished" photos.

Had a great surprise when I got home from work tonight. Sitting at the front door was a tall box. Inside was my new stock. Also had a small box and in it was the Scope sunshade. WOO HOO!!!! Tomorrow the scope rings arrive via UPS so will have more pictures tomorrow. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Give in to the dark side. Afterall. You probably have WAY too much money in your checking account and your credit cards can't be nearly maxed yet.

It was a fun project. I REALLY want to build another one and I haven't really finished this one yet.

Kinda pissed cause the UPS guy didn't come before I left for work. Oh well. Looks like another late night playing with the Ruger.

Had a hard time getting the scope rings on the mount. The steel rings actually cut into the aluminum mount at a couple spots, and I had to file and sand it down a bit to remove the burrs. All and all I am happy with the final outcome. I plan to take it to the range this weekend and punch some holes. Final sighting it will be at end of May. Here she is.

That is awesome!!!! You will not shoot some holes. I am pretty sure the bullets will all go through the same hole as the first. Great job!

Thanks much. The plan is to take it out today and try to shoot some holes.

Looks like a fine rifle for varmint hunting.

Hopefully there will be fewer cats in the neighborhood. I went to the shooting range, and they were having a closed match, so couldn't shoot. I may have to load up the subsonic ammo and try my hand at a squirrel. I want to shoot damnit. I will let you all know when I do and how it goes.

I just ordered a Blackhawk weapons case so I can carry the rifle without scaring the sheeple. I also want a hard case, but want a pelican 1720 and can't justify the extra right now. Not that that has stopped my so far.
