Who has one? What do you think of it? I want a 9mm fun gun, not a combat or defensive pistol just a gun that's fun to shoot that I can find the ammo for cheap.

I like the HP. Have one. Have not shot it in years. It is one of the short list of guns I always wanted to have. It is a very accurate pistol and I enjoyed shooting it, even though I am one who constantly gets hammer-bit. For a 13+ round pistol it is surprisingly comfortable in the hand. You could definitely do much worse for a 9mm plinker.
As to why I have not shot it in so long.....not really sure. I just seem to always grab something else when it's time to go to the range.
A High Power is the first pistol I would buy if we had sensible gun laws up here.

Greetings, Mr. RoadRunner-
I have a Canadian Inglis Hi-Power, circa late '50's, with shoulder stock/holster set up, and the ever optimistic 1000 meter sight array. AS far AS a well built, reliably functional, comfortable gun goes, it's great. Entirely robust in design, rugged enough to withstand a roofing brutalization, yet perform flawlessly inside the dumpster behind K-Mart, and out in the VD clinic parking lot, with nary a stovepipe, nor light primer hit, even with cheapo commie 9mm rounds. AS not considered a Class III, or Title II short barreled rifle, nor restricted by any Curios & Relics codicles, legal to own in the US. Try one, you'll like it.
AS ever,
Your ol' pal,
Wally J. Corpse

I have one (back home) and it was my all time favorite and "go-to" carry gun but I have to admit that I have not looked at newer designs in about 15 years as expats arent allowed to own guns in their host countries. There may be much better nowadays, my knowledge is outdated but it is still a great pistol. I found it very accurate and reliable.

I don't know what the Mag disconnect feature is? If I recall correctly, on mine there is a button by my right thumb, a simple press and the mag dropped out and the new one went in. I found it fast. Is this feature on the newer models or am I missing something?

The mag disconnect is sometimes called the mag safety. It prevents the gun from firing if there is no magazine in the gun. Unfortunately it also makes what would otherwise be a nice, 2-stage-ish single action trigger into a grinding, crunchy affair. Removing the disconnect bits from the trigger mechanism is very simple.
Ken likes to revive zombie threads...on the one hand I salute his willingness to probe the depths of the JD graveyard. On the other hand, this tendency is kinda icky--like having 75-year-old Sophia Loren kiss you on the mouth.

Great looking pistols! Still wishing I had got that MKIII Hi-Power from my local gun shop back in 2000 or thereabouts. Great price (by our standard) too. Well I did have a CZ-75B already but still.. what a dumbass mistake. These days the pistol purchasing permits are nigh impossible to get because no-one is really sure what the new law is going to be like and all the license issuing is on hold. Damn!

I have a CD (Charles Daly) Hi-Power and it runs great! The best thing I did to is was get rid of the magazine safety and it improved the trigger pull so much that it seemed like I had a custom trigger job done on it. I really like the Hogue grips and the Mecgar magazines bump the capacity up to 16-rounds.

It's about a 2-beer (20 minute job). Some say it can be done without removing the trigger, but I couldn't get that to work. The trigger comes out easy (1 pin) anyways. Then the small pin (that goes through the trigger) is removed and out it comes. I replaced the pin so I wouldn't lose it in case I ever sold the pistol and the new owner wanted it put back in.
I had heard the CD's were discontinued, but they come up for resale from time to time at reasonably good prices.

Going back to Roadrunner's original intent to find a 9mm fun gun, I would recommend the S & W Sigma 9mm. Its about as point and shoot as a revolver and runs about $300 - $325 new, barely more than half of what you'd pay for a Glock 19.
I prefer the .40 myself, but the 9mm is cheaper to shoot and a little easier to handle.
I've had eighteen Glocks and about a half dozen Sigmas and the ergonomics on the Sigmas are preferable to me over the Glocks. Other than the Sigma .380, which was an absolute POS design-wise, and Smith ripping off a lot of Glock's features, I can't fault the Sigmas.
Dependable, accurate, and durable.
Ken Brock
11-21-2009, 12:04 PM
Sigma.......oooof
it wasn't just the Sigma .380 that ripped off the Glock, it was the whole Sigma line. Which is why S&W had to pay off Glock
In my experience, the Sigmas that I've seen didn't stand up to a whole lot of shooting without excessive wear
a better option would be to get a police trade in Glock 19. The police trade ins usually have been carried a lot and shot very little. After they are traded in, Glock refurbishes them and sends them out to dealers
much cheaper than a new one but still in good shape
I've had no troubles with any Sigmas other than the .380 which had the magazine built as part of the handle and had to be pinched to be released. It held six + one and if you loaded the full seven the first round would ALWAYS stovepipe. Never had a stovepipe or misfire on any of my other Sigmas. Everyone knows they ripped off Glock. And they paid for it.
My overall choice is the Glock 23. Dollar for dollar, the Sigma is a good gun.

I do and I like it. Few pistols feel as good in the hand as the GP/P-35/BHP. However, one of those which does is probably a better choice as a fun gun: CZ-75
They are nearly as universal as the Hi-Power and, in my experience, more robust as well. And for whatever reason, the Czech pistols are a real bargain too.

I learned to shoot on a 1911 when I was nine years old. Thirty something years later, I am far more comfortable with internal safeties and a heavier trigger pull than I ever was with a cocked and locked single action.
The post initiated about a fun 9mm to shoot, not a combat or defensive pistols. The gent who started it just asked if others though the Browning HP was the best way to go. :ssmile:

John M. Browning had sold his patents to the 1911 so He had to design a pistol that did not use any of those patents. Kind of starting from scratch.
Dieudonne Saive was really the Co-Designer of the Hi-Power. He invented the double stacked Magazine (which Browning was reluctant to include in the design) and took the design from 1926 to 1935 when it was produced.
The Magazine disconnect or "safety" was a French design requirement Not the idea of either designer.
Anyhow, great gun. If you want a classic, this would be my 1st choice. You will pay a little more but if you ever have to sell it the value will always be there. Or if you have kids this would make a nice family heirloom.
If price is more of a factor then there are plenty of 9mm that would fit the bill. Several have been mentioned. I think the best bang for the buck 9mm fun gun would be the Ruger P89. Its not the slickest or most accurate but its solid and fun to shoot.

Hi Sheldon. I met you and said hello at a knife show several years ago.
The Browning Hi-Power is a classic design of a world-wide accepted combat handgun. Let's give it it's due.
Sure, it has been far surpassed by more innovative designs. Lot's of well-informed folks prefer the 1911 to the P35. I myself have moved on to the SIG family of defensive sidearms. I admire the Glocks, they are just not for me. Yes, I have tried them, G19 and (gasp) G20. I just can't get past the horrendous trigger. To each his own. My Sig P239 is just about perfect for my needs. For house duty, my old Colt Series 80 (Highly customized) will fill that role.
Let's keep it civil and let the BHP guys chime in with some good stories.
