View Full Version : My 10/22 Project

Ok folks, due to an old thread Kaxter posted, I MUST build a custom 10/22 target rifle. I am after pure performance here so allot of tweaks will take place. For anyone interested in this, thanks to Kaxter, I would recommend http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/ as it is FULL of valuable information
Here is my plan:
I am going to start with a Stainless Steel Ruger 10/22 from Wal-Mart (IN HAND). They can be had for $208 for the one with the wooden stock and $194 for the on with the synthetic stock. I am going to just get the one with the wood stock for two reasons:
1-Thats the only stainless model my local Wal-Mart has in stock right now and I don't feel like special ordering it
2-I plan to sell the stock as soon as I get it and think I will get more for a wooden one on the aftermarket as you can modify it
Once I have the rifle, as mentioned, I plan to strip it down and sell the following, must likely on the forum mentioned above:
1-22" stainless stock barrel
2-wooden stock
3-aluminum scope mount
I witnessed the sale of a standard blued barrel and stock from a similar model and the dude sold the stock for $50 + shipping and the barrel for $30 + shipping the same day he posted it, so thats allot more than I thought you would get for them. This would lessen the cost of the parts I plan to utilize down to about $130 or so.
Here are a list of parts that I plan to install/utilize
The Gun itself
-Stafford Yukon stock in electric blue(IN HAND)
-Green Mountain 18" stainless fluted barrel(IN HAND)
-9"-13" bi-pod (IN HAND)
-Bushnell Elite 4200 6x24x40 with Mil Dot(IN HAND)
-Power custom style weaver receiver base mount(IN HAND)
-Burris signature Zee 1" scope rings(IN HAND)
-Volquartsen Bedding System (IN HAND)
-Volquartsen Extended Magazine Release (stainless)(IN HAND)
-Volquartsen Target Hammer (IN HAND)
-Volquartsen Auto Bolt release (IN HAND)
-WeaponKraft buffer(IN HAND)
-WeaponKraft stainless takedown screw(IN HAND)
-Tennessee Precision Arms target trigger (anoded blue)(IN HAND)
-Volquartsen extractor(IN HAND)
(looking into suppressor)
I think thats it for the parts, If I remember anything else, I will add it in later
Now as for as custom work being done to it besides stuff I do:
-Bolt work by Randy @ CPC
Now for accessories I know I already want:
-Redhead double gun hard case(IN HAND)
-Leupold Lenspen(IN HAND)
-Bushnell Spacemaster spotting scope
-PatchWorm
-Not sure what type of benchrest and resettable targets I want yet
So far I have the scope, stock and barrel ordered. I will post pictures as each item arrives and update this thread as I go

 Sounds like a badass setup. Just one thing; have you thought about a Leupold scope? I know they're expensive, but worth every penny and then some. My Dad, brother and myself all have a Leupold 3X9 on our deer rifles and they've never let us down. Dad's had his for over 20 years! Just something to think about.

I thought about ALL scopes. This is where I did the majority of my research and althought it was hard to shell out $400+ for a scope, I am sure I will be happy with it. Being able to handle one in person at Bass Pro Shop confirmed that I got the one I wanted.
Here is the one I got:

Ok, today I received my first part of this project. The gun itself. I picked it up as planned at Wal-Mart. I am working this evening at midnight for a couple hours and its throwing my whole weekend off so I am going to wait till tomorrow to disassemble it and photograph the parts I plan to sell on rimfirecentral.com. When I sell those parts, I will use those funds to purchase some more stuff off my list.

Yeah, they are not in stone now as I heard that you may be able to see them through the scope. I will look into it more and adjust accordingly

This one will be my deluxe paper puncher from 75-100 yds and may take on the occasional squirrel. I plan to build my wife one next, followed by a model with 16" barrel for me more suited for hunting, followed by a Bull pup style model. So far, I am ready to build 4 total. I am sure it will go up :poke:

I have been looking at suppressors lately. Isn't it like $500 just to get the 'transfer' stamp?

"(looking into suppressor)"
I have been looking at suppressors lately. Isn't it like $500 just to get the 'transfer' stamp?
Tax stamp should be $200. The can itself is where the real cost is. I have priced them anywhere from $600 and up.
I myself would prefer something along the lines of a Ruger 77/22 with a fully suppressed barrel added. It makes it look like a bull barrel rifle....but really, really quiet. The one I have shot before was much quieter with .22 shorts than any of my pellet guns have been.
TBG, I can't wait to see some completed pics. That scope isn't going to stick out past the end of the barrel is it? http://jerzeedevil.com/forums/images/smilies/064.gif

Is the price for the stamp different for a suppressor verses a transferable rifle. Or are they all "Class 3" and the same $200 fee? Seemed like I had heard $500 but I do not own one "yet".

(M15) What are the required transfer procedures for an individual who is not qualified as a manufacturer, importer, or dealer of NFA firearms? [Back (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:history.back%281%29)]
ATF Form 4 (5320.4) must be completed, in duplicate. The transferor must first complete the face of the form. The transferee must complete the transferee's certification on the reverse of the form and have the "Law Enforcement Certification" completed by the chief law enforcement officer.
The transferee is to affix, on each copy of the form, a 2-inch by 2-inch photograph of the transferee taken within the past year (proofs, group photographs or photocopies are unacceptable). The transferee's address must be a street address, not a post office box. If there is no street address, specific directions to the residence must be included.
If state or local law requires a prior permit or license to purchase, possess, or receive NFA firearms, a copy of the transferee's permit or license must accompany the application. A check or money order for $200 ($ 5 for transfer of "any other weapon") shall be made payable to ATF by the transferor. All signatures on both copies must be in ink. Submit fingerprints on FBI Form FD-258, in duplicate. Fingerprints must be taken by a person qualified to do so, and must be clear and classifiable. If wear or damage to the fingertips do not allow clear prints, and if the prints are taken by a law enforcement official, a statement on his or her official letterhead giving the reason why good prints are unobtainable should accompany the fingerprints.
Forward completed information and appropriate tax payment to the Bureau of ATF, P. O. Box 73201, Chicago, IL 60673. Transfer of the NFA firearm may be made only upon approval of the ATF Form 4 by the NFA Branch. If the application is approved, the original of the form with the cancelled stamp affixed showing approval will be returned to the applicant. Otherwise, the tax will be refunded.
Upon approval of the ATF Form 4, the transferor should transfer the firearm as soon as possible, since the firearm is now registered to the transferee. [26 U. S. C. 5812, 27 CFR 179.83-179.86]

Gotcha. Not sure where I got that $500 figure from.
Could have been from here, these are annual taxes paid by dealers/manufacturers:
(M12) When must firearms special (occupational) taxes be paid, how much are the taxes, and how are they paid?
On first engaging in business and thereafter on or before the first day of July, these taxes must be paid in full. The current taxes are set out in the following table. Taxes are paid in the manner discussed in Question [b]M11 (http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#m11), above.
SPECIAL (OCCUPATIONAL) TAX RATES UNDER THE NFA CLASS OF ANNUAL TAXPAYER FEE
1 Importer of Firearms (Including "Any Other Weapons") $1000.00
2 Manufacturer of Firearms (Including "Any Other Weapons") $1000.00
3 Dealer of Firearms (Including "Any Other Weapons") $ 500.00
4 Importer of Firearms (Including "Any Other Weapons") $ 500.00 REDUCED*

Got those parts today and install them.
http://www.framelocks.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/normal_more1022parts.jpg
The extended mag release was a breeze to install and make a huge difference. All it took was popping out one pin and taking the old one out, and then popping the new one in. It was really that easy. Next I need to get the VQ bedding ordered and send off the bolt to CPC for a bolt rework. Then I will go from there, but thats the next two things to do.

TheBadGuy
03-26-2005, 11:35 AM
Thats correct. I could do the bolt work myself as well if I wanted to strip everything down, polish it, etc.. But this guy does it all the time and can tune it better than I. Except for this, everything else is EXTREMELY simple to do.
Here is what CPC does to the bolt:
CPC 10/22 L.R. Bolt Combo... Bolt is diassembled, cleaned and polished... Headspace is surface ground and squared to a .0425 rim depth, the same as a bolt action rifle too tweek in alittle accuracy... A hole is E.D.M.'ed, a hardened ground solid dowel pin is pressed in over the top of the front of the firing pin... This new dowel pin keeps the front of firing pin from raising up and causing flyers and gives more consistant firing pin strikes... Rear / bottom of bolt body is normally heavily radiused for smoother bolt function with standard velocity ammo... The seen outside of bolt is beautifully prism jeweled as a finishing touch... Send in complete bolt assembly with $45 plus $5 s&h... (check, or a $50 bill works good - no wait to clear, money orders are best with "Pay To" left blank since we have our own bank authorizing stamp)... Turnaround... After it arrives - max it can be here is 2.5 weeks... If there is 2 or more bolts in package, its $45 each plus one $5 s&h... (Do no multiply s&h)

I know exactly how you feel. Getting VERY tired of waiting for parts. I had wanted to wait til I had all the parts at one time, and do the rebuild all at once, but getting very frustrated. I have been waiting for my new scope rings for 2 weeks and nothing. I finally e-mailed the company and they were all "we have no record of the transaction". Needless to say I was pissed. After a total of 7 e-mails back and forth with these butt-heads, and giving them EVERY detail of the transaction twice, I finally get an e-mail saying "Sorry, we misplaced the order in our warehouse, and it will ship tomorrow"
Anyway, back to your sweet rifle. Looks incredible. If it shoots hald as good as it looks, you have a real winer there.

Bro,
I can't believe I missed this thread. That rifle is awesome!
Awesome rifle BG! Nice work! I have one that I built and is similar, but not as fancy as yours. Those GM barrels are awesome. Love the stock.

This sounds like a great project! However, its quite unfortunate that none of the pictures show up any longer.
Maybe TBG can post a new pic of the Beast so I can get a look at it.

This thing ended up being a great bench gun. When I run out of bulleye paper on my targets, I can shoot the staples out and the targets just fall to the ground at 50 yards.
While a great bench gun, its too heavy and not practical for any other use. Thats what has spurred a new build in my other thread.
at 50 yards.
At 50 yards, the objective lens of your scope is already halfway there.:devilzeek
