What happened to your 10/22 project. I became obsessed today and think I am going to embark on a similar mission. If I sell one good custom, I would have enough for gun, barrel and stock for the most part. Then I would pick up some accessories start plinking.
Give us details about your project, where your at with pictures please

I had every single thing planned out in detail. Then I bought a new motorcycle and got really poor really fast.
But I am STILL going to do the project, and it shall kick much ass.
I was going with GM barrel, VQ hammer and trigger, VQ bedding system, Corelite stock, Harris mount and rings.

How about a direct link to the stock, hammer, and barrel.
Does it matter which Ruger 10/22 you buy originally?? I see wal-mart has a cheap verison for $166 and I figured since your replacing about everything, I see no need for a more expensive version. Is there?

By the way, the only thing I have decided on is a Fajen Thumbhole Silhouette in the Midnight finish. Still need to decide on a barrel and pending the above question, the base model

Ok, I don't have time to read up right now as I got to go to work, what is the bedding system? :idunno:

I am addicted!!! THANKS
I have my stock narrowed down, barrels wise I am down to two. One being double the price of the other and I am just trying to read up on that site to see if its worth it. Got my scope choosen. I am ready to start picking up pieces this upcoming payday :atyou: :dammit:

AWESOME!!!
Sorry my reply is so late, ive been super busy. You are gonna love this project man, I just know you will. Its really fun putting it all together. And most everyone uses the standard blue 10/22 that walmart sells, they are all the same.
What barrels are you choosing from?

Well I decided to use Wal-Marts standard stainless model as it’s only about $30 more and I am going with a stainless barrel. So far I have it narrowed down between either a:
Green Mountain 18" Stainless Bull barrel with flutes
OR
A Lilja barrel
Someone suggested I go with the Lilja but it’s over double the price of the Green Mountain model and it looks like the GM barrels have a good following on that forum so it’s a hard decision. The more expensive the parts become the longer it will take me to finish and I don't want to cheap out but at the same time I don't want to waste cash. I am going with a thumbhole stock with high cheek rest and am trying to decide on what laminate
Looks like I am going to with a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 Mil Dot scope and it looks like it and the base rifle are the only two DEFINATES so far.
What’s the deal with that bedding system??? Do I really need one? I read somewhere you don't with certain shit, but I am not even sure what it is :idunno:
Do you think its better to send off my trigger assem. to have it work on, or do I buy parts and do it myself or do I buy an entire new drop in unit?

TBG,
I bought the Fajen, thumbhole silhoutte stock (nice stock). I ended up buying an Adams/Bennett barrel with Wheeler compensator. I used a BSA Platinum 8x36x44 mil dot scope. Lastly, a drop in Volquartsen trigger groupe and you are well off. I found all of these parts from Midway. They are a great sourse for reasonably priced gun parts. At 50 yrds I can now make a one jagged hole group! Let us know what you end up doing.
Here is a shot of my baby so far.

Let me ask. How difficult was it for you to assemble the parts yourself with min. tools?
Any regrets with the stock or scope? I am just trying to do this right the first time around as I am afraid I can see wanting to build more than one of these babies

It takes almost no tools to do what I did. An allen wrench takes out the barrel. A flat head screwdriver takes off the stock. A small allen wrench for the scope mounts. Very basic handtools and you are there! You will love it!
I actually have been very happy with all of the items I got for my little baby.
That BSA is a pretty darn good scope for the money. The barrel is great also. The stock was a splurge but worth every penny. The trigger group is a worthwhile added cost feature also.
I spent less where I felt I could without compromising the end result. I see no reason to spend 300.00+ for a scope on a .22 if a 120.00 one will work as well. YMMV Good Luck

Yeap, everytime I have something picked out, I change it
The Bushnell Elite scope was originally choosen b/c its seemed like an awesome scope and I am all about accuracy with this one. But it looks like there are allot of cheaper options avaiable? Any other model scopes you think I should look at??

Man, at 1/4th the price, this would allow me to just about get everything in HALF the time
http://www.riflescopes.com/products/PT832X44MD/bsa_8-32x44_platinum_target_riflescope.htm
Is this similar to yours??
Do yourself a favour (and the gun's next owner judging by the rate you get rid of stuff) and buy some decent screwdrivers for gunsmithing. The screw heads will thank you for it.
I'm following this one along as I have a 10/22 that really wants a new barrel and stock.

Exactly the same scope I have. Great price also! Personally for this application I feel that this scope will do all you or I could ask of it. No doubt.

I don't know, after careful consideration, I think I may still go with the Bushnell 4200. I have just read too many good things about them. The thought of getting a good scope at 1/4 the price is very appealing, but this is my first one and I want to go all out on the optics. I wonder where I can find this model to look at in person :idunno:
Looks like I will have to call some gun shops tomorrow. If I can find one to look at in person and the difference between it and a lower priced scope doesn't blow me away, then I will have to reconsider again. Once the first part is purchased, I will be sure to start a new thread and post pictures as I go.
Off to see what folder gets the axe in case I need the high price hooker scope :-D

Jason, I cant stress enough how AWESOME the VQ Target Hammer is, and its only $35. It will drop your trigger pull straight down to a CRISP 2.5.
It's awesome, trust me. You could buy your stock, barrel, VQ hammer, and scope for right now, and that shouldnt be too high of price, and that thing will shoot soooo nice. And the hammer is super easy to install, takes like 5 mins to do. A bedding system is still in debate to this day. Some guys want it totaly bed free, with absolutley nothing underneath it. Then there are others who want a bedding system. I like a bedding system, but I am an opinionated bastard. RFC has fights about bedding once a week at least.:)
Here is a little tutorial on bedding. This is the glass method, which I dont like, but it will give you and idea of what needs to be done. Its got pics and full instructions.
http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=86271
And I would just go with the GM barrel. You will shoot 5 shot groups at 50 yards and they will all be dime sized groups. One ragged hole.
This is a pic with a 20" GM barrel with CCI Bulk ammo. I pulled it off of RFC. 5 shot group, 50 yards:

Kaxter, do you think that the VQ bedding system is good enough on its own?? I like the idea MUCH better than fucking with any epoxy or messy shit like that.
Kaxter
03-09-2005, 12:23 PM
I think its fine. But there are people on RFC that say it isnt enough.
But I went to the local range and that is the only thing the guy had, and that gun shot like a motherfucker. He was doing dime groups at the full 25 yards, and said that it looks exactly like that at 50 yards.
We need a longer range.:)
TheBadGuy
03-09-2005, 05:00 PM
How about you ArchAngel?? Any type of bedding system??
I think I am just going to follow your lead on this one Kaxter with the VQ, as the other shit looks too complicated and most likely a pain in the ass. I have also read horror stories about people permanantly gluing guns to stocks b/c the releasing agent didn't work correctly.

I do really not go with the bedding myself. I check for a solid receiver to stock fitup and a good free floating of the barrel and that is about it. This means nothing though. I believe Kaxter and others get even further into the process of perfecting their tack drivers than I do. I try a little and then wait, then a little more and wait, etc.
There are others better at it than I. They are fun to mess with and I think that you should get whatever your heart desires or you will regret settling for less on the advice of a cheapskate like me.
Nice one hole groups like Kaxter are attainable off the bench with my toy as it sits, so I am happy for now. I have friends that feel you need to have your barrel cryogenicaly treated to fully appreciate the barrels potential. I have not bothered, yet.

Well guys, after much debate, I decided to go with the Bushnell and ordered tonight. It was a tough call but I didn't want to have any regrets down the road and went with my gut.
It should ship tomorrow, now I gotta go order the stock and barrel next, or at least the stock and a few parts. Depends on how the calculator reads, either way, I have begun the process.
I put up three knives for sale to get this sucker built and sold two within 10 minutes, so thats why the scope was first  :punish:
TheBadGuy
03-09-2005, 08:54 PM
Got what it takes to order the barrel and stock today as well and the damned website shopping cart on the site that has them both is screwed and doesn't work so I will have to call them tomorrow to place my order.
So by the time I get home from work tomorrow I should be the proud owner of a stock, barrel and scope. All to probably come sometime next week or late this week.
Now I need the gun, hammer, mount, rings, bedding, bipod, clips, case, recoil buffer, etc... :D:
It never ends. But getting the stuff I have ordered were the big purchases, the rest are fun tweaks. Life is good. With any luck, I will be back to thinking about cusom folders in a matter of weeks. But way it is now, I think of NOTHING but this target rifle

Damn I love fun projects like this. You are well on your way to having one sweet rig. You can just go ahead and try the system without bedding first, and if you decide you need it just stick it in there, the VQ system takes like 10 mins max.
What barrell and stock did you end up choosing? I cant wait to see what this sucker looks like!
TheBadGuy
03-10-2005, 05:33 AM
I am going to go with the VQ bedding right off the bat. I choose the GM 18" stainless steel fluted barrel and a Stanfford Yukon stock in Electric blue. The color of laminante hard to choose but there was only one thing I didn't like about electric blue and thats that allot of other folks have used that one, but I really liked it and didn't want that to effect my decision.
I will take pictures as these things arrive. Next up is the gun, bedding system, trigger and hammer, etc..

Yeah, I wish. ATF ain't giving me that shit. Even if they would, your talking big money there.

Here are the parts I used in mine:
Volq. stainless, fluted barrel with comp.
Volq. 2000 trigger, tuned by GG&G (Tucson AZ)
Bell and Carlson Osprey stock (best out there IMHO) fully adj. w/ Anshutz style rail.
Volq. bolt guts.
Volq. barrel bar (for scope)
bedded by GG&G using "MarineTex" and barrel cryo treated by Krieger.
25m 5 shot target .001.
50m is an elongated hole.
100m is sub .5 if the wind plays nice. I weigh and rim guage each round as well as visualy inspect them. Ammo is Fed. UltraMatch or Eley Tennex.
Scope is a Bushnell Elite 6-18. Cost? Waaaayyyyy to much. My next .22 will be built off a Anshutz or Remington reciever with a Lilja barrel. Lilja is the best in the biz. My brother is using my .22 for P.Dogs this year in Colorado, he says it does well out to about 150-175 and is a blast to shoot.

Ok guys,
I started another thread yesterday and before I could finish it, I had to go tend the baby and lost the info. I will start a new one labled "My 10/22 Project" where I am going to document all the stuff I buy and install and follow it along with details in all the installing/customizing as I go.
So far I think I have every single part and process decided on right down to the spotting scope and resettable targets. I will lay that all out in another thread. I got a chance today to check out the Bushnell 4200 Elite at Bass Pro Shop and I am happy I went with it. Its definatly the best scope I have ever handled and I can't wait to get mine.
Here is where I am at:
Monday I will have an Electric Blue Yukon stock and a 18" stainless GM barrel with flutes arriving.
Tuesday I will have my Bushnell 4200 Elite 6x25x40 with Mil Dot coming
Thats all the purchased things so far. I am waiting to see how drunk SuperD gets tonight and if he buys my Duncan Whiplash. If someone buys that tonight or tomorrow I will go to Wal-Mart and purchase a Stainless 10/22. From there I will start to get the other parts that I will list in the new thread.
I am very excited about this project and located a gun club I will be joining shortly to have access to a range. Problem I see is I already have my eye on a Bullpup stock I would like to get for a second project and I am not even technically started on this one yet :idunno: :dammit:

Buy the way guys, I looked into getting a Silencer and I am thinking I really am going to get one. My state has legal ownership and it looks like the tax stamp is only $200!! Then the silencer I am looking at is about $450. Sounds like allot? But I have spent more on just one knife and we are talking about having a bad ass silenced gun here. That beats out Ken Onions best knife in my opinion.
Thanks for costing me more money guys!!!! :atyou:
This will definatly be the last thing purchased as it is a hassle but very doable. I was always under the impression to buy a silencer you had to pay $2000 tax and repay a renewel fee every year. I thought that since I was a kid but I was WAY off. Its a one time $200 per silencer per ownership.

yo baddie
why not jus use subsonic rounds?
imho .22 lr doesnt haver thast big of a range, id just go with subsonics if you want it quiet.
TheBadGuy
03-12-2005, 08:31 AM
subsonic rounds on there own aren't that quiet compared to that ammo mixed with a silencer. As far as range, from what I have read, at 50 yards, certain suppresors do not effect accuracy
