i thought that was a shark... from the overall length, the dorsal being so sharply defined and head profile...

i was at clearwater beach a looong time ago before it was so 'hot' and the real estate was all sold out...

a dolphin fully breached about 5 feet from me while i wa sin the water... scared the hell outta me... i had been standing there in the waves wondering why those fish kept jumping out of the water then 'surprise'...

I was laying on an air mattress on the ocean up in the 80s at Virginia Beach years ago when I lived there. I was just floating and relaxing, and enjoying myself, looking out toward the ocean. Suddenly, there was a line of dolphins doing their typical run up the shore, and they were REALLY close in.

I thought to myself, "Damn, those dolphins are in clo... clo... uh..." and looked over my shoulder to find that I was WAY the hell out from the beach. There were a couple of little tiny people waving at me and jumping up and down, and a lifeguard signaling me, but I was out so far I could not hear them at all.

First, I gripped the air mattress hard, then I thought, "Shit, I'm gonna break it...." and I started paddling back toward shore. It seemed to take an eternity, and I was drifting north toward the bay as I paddled in. I had to walk like a quarter mile south to get back to where I started.

I never turned my back on the beach for more than a minute or two after that.
