Well I won't be wearing black, but I do think G. W. is a dick smack. All the wining about money for armor, S.S., and we're spending how much on a coronation.

Last I herd $45 MIL. Thats $45,000,000.

I am accually not a liberal, I just feel he is the anit-chirst. You cannot even call a Democrat a liberal now a days. All they do is agree with the conseratives, they just cry while doing it. God bless a two party system. You and I have lost more rights since he has been in office, not to mention all the WONDERFUL environmental deregulations. I don't know how old you are, but at this point I will need all those meds I cannot afford to help fight off all the pollutants when I'm 50. (And don't call me green either.) I guess at my 82nd birthday, when I'm allowed to retire I can take all the money I get to gamble on the stockmarket that is susposed to be my SS and buy you a beer. That is unless Iraq gets us with their NOOKLEAR stockpile. Unless we get drafted.

If it's all paid back to the nation. Some proof would help. The point is we are in Afghanistan and in deep doo doo in Iraq, and having a gala ball? A friend of mine spent 15 months in Iraq and couldn't even get his boots replaced. It's all money, if it can be raised for the coronation why can't it be raised for the troops or S.S.? What does liking or disliking G. W. have to do with it? Dealing with things is the point.

Because we haven't always been at war. There hasn't always been a shortage of armor for humvees. Outsourcing, military recruitment problems, unemployment, and corporate coruption. Seems like bad timing for a gala to me.

Great speech from the President! I was impressed by how many times the President and other speakers managed to say "One Nation under God" to smack that wanker Neudow in the face. While I enjoyed that, I did personally feel that there was a little too much preaching in the address. I've gone to church on Sundays and not heard God mentioned that many times....:)

All in all, a good speech and a good day!

There are pros and cons to W. But about that SS thing....

Do you really think allowing folks to take some of their own money and invest as they wish is really a bad thing? On principle I mean. Yes, it would further exacerbate the future SS shortfall in the near term. But letting people use their own money to invest as they wish is a bad thing!!?? Please explain that to me.

Edit to add: NOONE who I have heard from either side is saying that there will never be a problem with SS in the future. The only arguement anyone is making is when. I am not sure there is an imminent crisis either, but everybody seems to agree eventually something has to be done. As far as the crack about working to 82 or whatever it was, that is the kind of shit we are looking at if something isn't done. I don't mean this edit to let folks go off tangent to argue anything, I still want someone to 'educate me' how investing my own money how I want is a bad thing.

I still want someone to 'educate me' how investing my own money how I want is a bad thing.

It is the best option out there , and is called a 401 K. Face it folks , if you don't take care of your retirement and rely on the government......I don't need a deck of cards and a chart of the stars to see dog food and crackers in your culinary future.
S.S. is a safety net and the program is in nowhere near the shape that this administration is trying to get you to believe.
example......the numbers they are using to forecast it's impending insolvency project that the economy will grow at 1.8% for the next ten years........yet the numbers they tout when they tell us how wonderful the economy is are closer to 4 %.
4% is far closer to reality , and the economy has been at or near this number for the last eighty years or so, and is not likely to change in the forseeable future.
S.S. should be O.K. as it is for at least forty years according to many economists and financial gurus I have heard on the news.
The problem is there..... but it is nowhere near as bad as we are being led to believe , and my biggest problem with it being overhauled in such a drastic manner is that I have been paying in for a good while and will rely on it as part of my total retirement package.
If I were 20 yrs old or a multi millionaire , I would feel differently.
But from where I am sitting , we have a government who can barely pave roads getting ready to fuck up something I have been promised since I started working some 30 years ago.
You cannot legislate against irresponsibility or stupidity , and if someone doesn't start putting away for their future , I would rather wait till they try to rob me in another twenty years , than have my fiscal shit messed with.
As problems go , health care is far larger than S.S. but the impact of fixing this would not benefit enough millionaires , whereas splitting up the S.S. trust would put gazillions of dollars into the pockets of the Michael Milkens and Ivan Boeskys of the world......not to imply that all brokers and traders are crooks.......nor to imply that all politicians have our best interests at heart.
