“Postmodern culture is recycled. Religions, myths, and philosophies are increasingly scrambled interpretations of bygone superstitions marketed into kitsch. Even our sins are no longer original.” :signhere: ~ Deadeye Dick ~

Wow what a crock, people go there and wonder how the stones got on top of each other and how amazing it is they've stayed upright all these years and come to find out its all basically a remake and not so amazing that its still intact. What hasn't been tampered with?

You know, I live about 15 miles from Stonehenge and about the same from Avebury. I have been lucky enough to get amongst the stones at Stonehenge on several occasions. I'm not totally convinced about articles like this published on alien and ufo websites. :devilzeek

One thing I do know though is that the stones are incredible and if you ever get a chance to get into the circle, do so :) Obviously its easier at Avebury as the circle encompasses a whole village :)

If any of you devils ever get to the UK and want to visit Avebury with a guide, please do drop me a line! I'd love to help out :)

I visited Stonehedge with a British classmate in 1969. At that time you could wander among the stones and sit on them, etc. There were some people in the parking area, but they left and we had the site to ourselves. It was a wonderful experience - very early in the morning, immediately after sunrise. Is Stonehenge restricted now?

Yep, access to Stonehenge is very restricted now. The normal everyday visitor gets to walk in a circle around the outside perimeter of the circle from behind a rope while security guards watch you.

At the Winter and Summer Solstice the circle is made accessible again though I think only the "officiating" Druids are allowed inside the circle. I'm not 100% sure on that though.

The other way you can access the stones is mainly during the summer evenings after the public has gone home. You have to apply in advance for permission and be from a recognised organisation or group. I think they have tried to restrict the number of these sorts of visits in recent years but I went twice with my Mums healing group. It was very interesting!

The only othe time I managed to get into the Circle was a completely different event and very special. I was about 18 years old. I had spent the evening with friends and had a really good time. I left their house at around 11.45pm and got onto my motorbike. I had the wanderlust spirit in me that night as it was a clear, moonlit evening. Instead of riding the 10 minute journey to my home I headed out of town onto the Dual carriageway. 25 minutes later and I pulled up in the carpark across the road from the fenced off area. I stood by my bike, lit up a cigarette and stood there, looking across at the stones as they glowed in the moonlight. After a few moments, one of the security guys approached me and asked why I was there. He was a bit surprised for a moment to discover I was female :devilzeek but happily chatted to me while I finished smoking. As I went to put my crash helmet back on he hmm'd and asked me if I wanted to see the stones from the other side of the fence. I of course said yes and was whisked through the underground passage then up onto the grass around the stones. He lifted the rope and suggested I might like to take a closer look!

I didnt hesitate and then spent the best part of an hour or so just wandering around the stones and being amazed at how much of the suns heat they still retained. The security guy left me alone pretty much, just spending a few minutes with me to start with when he told me about a particular stone.

Apparently, when the moon is right, there looks to be the shadow of a crouching man at the base. Looking at the colours and shapes in the stone where he showed me I can quite understand how this can be seen! He maintained though that the person was rather more real looking than just a shadow....... ;)

Wow. Tiffers you are so lucky to have had that expierence! I would have loved every minute of it. It must have been so quiet out there.

It was quiet, just the sound of the breeze making the long grass swish as it worked its way through it.

If I could recapture that night and do it again, I would.

It was fabulous :)

I went in the early 90's and it was the first time I had gone home to England since leaving in 1980, I took my girlfriend at the time with me and she was very interested in druid dudes, Wicca, celtic lore ect. so Stonehenge was high on the list, we stayed in Avebury for a few days and had a blast.
Anyway, back to the tale: I had never been before and as we approached in a rental car at night we were both a little awestruck at first sight - I just pulled the car over and we got out and headed towards the cicle -over the fields, when we got up closed I was a little miffed to see the fence around it - never used to be fenced off ( untill it got painted lime green one student rag week) Anyway, being spry and agile back then and freezing I may add, we hopped the fence and were in and amongst the stones, actually climbing all over them, lying down on the toppled monoliths, and taking lots of pics. and I am here to tell you they are some fucking HUGE rocks.
Everything was going just fine until we hear a german shepard going crazy and a guard shouting " move away from the stones" Being the dummy I am I did not realise the place would be guarded, never mind an official entrance and swag shop by gawd. - the thing that tipped the guard off was the flash of the camera !! got some great pics of my ex though.
Dayna did all the talking and hammed it up with the american accent and claimed we just had no idea...............for myself I kept my trap shut as my yorkshire accent may have blown our cover.
The guard was really nice in the end and explained he thought we were a bunch of pot smoking hippies at first :wes: It was very close to the spring equinox. He invited us to come back on the morrow and view it like all the other riff raff, from the outside of the fence, which we did. Although it was a bit anti climactic after the night before.
I got this cool poster from the gift shop to make up for our earlier discrepancy.
my scanner does not work right now so I am unable to put up the pics I took.

Hi Roslyn, you have a beautiful name - very celtic. that is a once a year shot.
The martians had it figured out that the sun will rise between the 2 main stones on the first day of spring, god bless em.
