View Full Version : Opinions on the Strider SNG ?
I'm thinking of getting a drop point Strider SNG , pref. gen 6 with the Hinderer lock bar stabaliser . I've not seen too many Striders , so I would like input from anyone who has used them . I'm thinking of using it outdoors , and as a uniform EDC.

There was a really good (unbiased and generally favorable) review of the new SnG over on SigForum....but they seem to be having server problems today. If/when it comes back up I'll post a link.
For biased reviews, see the Strider forum over at USN.
I think as an outdoor (read in place of fixed blade) knife the SnG should perform well. Many people carry them as EDCs. I guess it kind of depends on what you will do / typically do with your knives. The most prying my knives see is when the tab on the top of the coke can won't come up far enough to get my finger under it. I do pry the occasional staple was well, but mainly I cut with my knives and pry with Craftsman screwdrivers (if they break, they get replaced).
I prefer to sacrifice door puncturing capability in favor of better and more refined slicing ability. But that's just me. I also prefer a more streamlined knife...but I am digressing into my preferences.
I'm sure a few will be along shortly to discuss their experiences with Striders.
Ok, SigForum is back up and running, but at turtle speed. Here's the link for the SnG thread. It as a lot of pictures!! The Strider Sickness (http://sigforum.com/eve/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=674608412&f=340601935&m=749104831)

If you can, hand pick it after looking at a bunch. From everything I've heard and my own personal experience their knives vary from piece to piece. Pay special attention to the lockup and make sure that's what you're looking for before you buy it. It's not for everyone.
Needless to say if you got a funky one the Striderguys would fix it for you but I don't like having to get brand new knives fixed.
Currently I've got 2 SnGs, one of which Josh picked out for me, and a TAD AR. I love the SnG that Josh picked out for me cause it's got an excellent lockup on it and the TAD AR is awefully nice too. I'm trying to stop myself from getting a Nightmare Grind SmF or SnG now. :???: It would be the Nightmare Tanto design if I 1) can find one, and 2) can afford one.

Since I,m not in a position to inspect multiple units , I think I'll have to pass unless I see one at a show , are the any on line retailers who would pick a good one for me ?

Phil at 2thehilt.com and Bladeart.com always seem to have a couple in stock. I haven't dealt with Bladeart directly but I hear good things about them. I have dealt with Phil at 2thehilt and he's a good guy to deal with.

if you get a bad one strider will take it back and get you a new one or a repaired one within a couple weeks...It can be a bummer, but at least this aint tone :)
I had an smf and and sng that had to go back, both were back to me in less than a week brand spanking new and perfect. more specifically, the sng had tightness issues( not a break in problem) lockup was loose, side to side play, and both had allignment problems, I think , point is these were minor problems that strider really woundt want to address as I am no soldier, more of a light user/collector but they stiill sent me two new knives out instantly with no charge what so ever, talk aobut locking up like a vault, I havent seen many other knives that are basically folding fixed blades. Strider gives preferential treatment to soldiers, possible they will help you out if you are leo, I dont know what "uniform every day carry" is but...
I tossed the sng in a trade, they are a little small, I still carry the smf gen1 nearly every day, It is my favorite knife, period, it is the nastiest knife I have ever had, it is so amazingly sharp, I am serious, its like they micro serrate these at strider or something, they are amazing. cept tantos, not real happy with those, but I also have an BN-SS , that is a 13" fixed blade, both of those are total keepers, but they are very prybar like, but I dont think bos treated s30v is appropriate for prying, I hate it when I hear that crap, the smf gen 2 with the stabalizer is very close tto the ultimate knife, contenders IMO would be the sebbie and the TNT as semi customs. I will tell you one HUGE difference, The pocket clips on striders are built to keep the knife in your pocket always, they are really tight, some hate it, some loosen them, but when it is tight like that it will not get lost or snatched of your person by some fartknocker. They hold thier value fairly well, its really not much of a risk to try one out and resell it, I would consider sending mine to you as a loan, but I only have the one, I am serious, they are that lovely. but some people just dont like big titties :)
It is the perfect user knife, ranked by ruggedness I think it goes smf/sng then sebbie then TNT, corse the TNT is totally wicked too, if you can call it weak at any time, it would be in comparision to a strider. and I didnt even mention the way your pointer finger gets locked in the blade when gripping and stays there.
Go with a used one from a reliable member at the strider forums. I doubt youll look back, or try the buck strider version for chickenscratch....

I just have to say I don't get the Strider thing.
They are not suck, but just seem to be $100 knives hyped up to be $350 knives. A monument to image-linked advertising.
I have one here, and frankly it doesn't come close to the MT LCC, not even in the same league, not same city even.
Better than a Kershaw, but not a Dalton or ProTech or MicroTech, except the image, which seems to want to make the owners into "Hardcore" Special Ops troops by the fact that they have this knife.
Ahem, right.

I ahve to reply, If there is a knife that I hate, it an lcc, I had two d/a and I can relate to not grasping the hype, cuase I didnt get it with the lcc, man is that funny, that one knife I hate...
one stabbed me in the gut cause its tip up...fluke Im sure, maybe weak detent...
Strider for me is about toughness, and the handle shape, love that trigger finger grip, specailly in reverse. Plus the knives really are built for use, like the washer coatings built to resist salt water...not just greaase like a sebbie, but a glue like stuff...they aint smooth thats for sure...but it is a heavy duty cutting tool, like a fixed blade, in two halves.
Man we be opposites UT II :-D tell me about why you think the lcc is a whole nother wolrd...must be a smoothness issue and the tight tolerences and smooth construction of the lcc.
