Ladies, Fish, and Gentlemen,
I was wondering if any of you have the same problem I have with the 30 round clip. I have the Mini-30 in 7.62x39 and the clip is the biggest POS to work with I have ever seen. It seems as if the loaded weight makes the clip droop and come loose of the retaining pin, making the thing fail to load another round. The lighter 5 round clip works fine, but what fun is blasting 5 caps? I was wondering if there is a way to modify the 30 round clip so it says seated. Otherwise, it's a kick in the ass to shoot.
I may be able to get some pics if anyone has some decent advice.
Best regards,
Bonz

Don't load the clip all the way. Try 20rnds more or less. See what happens?

IMHO, Get an AR15 with an upper in each caliber. It will shoot circles around the Ruger :ar50: :ar50: And there's lots of other calibers to get as well :punish: :punish:

Skip the Ruger and get a SKS.

Mr. Stabber,
I would, but they are banned here in commie queer CA. The federal AWB sunset does not apply here where voters appoint pigs (Fineswine) to public office.
Gent's,
As far as the Mini-30 vs the Mini-14, I'd take the Mini-14, but then get an AK-47 first if you don't already have one.
I already have an SKS, but I need to demililtarize it so nobody thinks I'm going to do some drive-by bayoneting.
I've tried only loading 10 rounds in the clip, but it still sucks. Its a lousy design. Unlike the AK clips which are beefy and lock in tight. I could probably modify the thing, but the queer heathens who write the rules here would probably toss me in the can and throw away the key.

I had a Mini-30 and still have a Mini-14. I never loaded my Mini magazines to full capacity - 20-25 in a 30 rounder, 15-18 in a 20 round mag. I prefer the Mini-14 so I sold the 30 (for a tidy profit); nothing wrong with it; typical Mini accuracy (MOMan).
The best magazine advice I can give you - is buy genuine factory Mini-30 magazines and don't fill them to capacity.

And then shitcan it and buy an SKS. Or an AK.
Yo, Ken, have you found a three-year-old thread today you did NOT bump? :decisions

There was a time that I tried to aquire all the Garand Rotating Bolt mechanism type guns, then sold most of them (bet Tim still has all his)...M1 carbine, M1 carbine w/folding wood (A2?) pistol-grip stock, M1 Garand, M1 Garand D Sniper, M1 tanker mod in .308, BM-59 in .308, Mini-14, Mini-14 Ranch, and Mini-30...
I put Choate folders on the last three, and without good (Ruger or equivalent) mags, the mag did sag...happy to say I didn't lose money on any of those sold, and think the sales in fact paid for my SA M1A (only $749 new, way back when)...
Shel
p.s. Never owned the stainless steel full stock or folder mini-14, but have looked at a few though. Problem is, the design on most of the guns listed above, IMO, is that they weren't designed for sustained firing...if you have to shoot through 100 rounds quickly, they'll get hot even quicker...

Shel, if you need more than 100 rounds thru a garand, you're in a mess bigger than you can fix with a rifle ;)

Ah, agreed. I was referring to the Ruger products in the (at the time) SoCal desert heat :shockedevil:

I would really like to get a Mini-14 - are they really that inaccurate? I ahve always heard that they're a fun, reliable little weapon.
I have seen a stainless version of the newer "Tactical Model" that is pretty sweet looking, and it would be a cheaper to shoot rotating bolt platform than my M1 carbine. I just wish to high heaven that they took AR-15 mags rather than their own "rotate into place" magazine. I know it's more true to the M1A/ M1 Garand design to have the mag insert that way, but it's a modern rifle and there are better ways of doing it.
I like the Mini 30, but I would think mags would be hard to find since the rifles don't seem to pop up too often.
Also, they're about half the price of an M1A - another rifle that's on my want list, but hard to justify at about $1600 new.

Jimmer, I say get one.
I got mine 10 yrs ago. ( Actually my second cause like a fool I sold my first from 1981). Got some 20 round factory mags from Midway a couple weeks ago for $30 each. Go with those if you can.
As far as accuracy, I got some handloads that were putting 3 shots into dime size at 30 yards... and about 3" at 100. Besides the damn things are meant for people on a budget to defend their castle...not win matches at Camp Perry.:devil1:

Gringo - at the cost of a Mini-14 today (and .223/5.56 ammo) the home defense budget is right up there just after shelter and food!
I was reading a book on small arms today - they try imply that the Mini-14 is a downsized M14. Although I don't own an M1A or M14, I do own an M1 Carbine and side by side they are very similar.

True, true.
I hate to be one of those 'buy them now cause bad days are comming' sorts... It was $430 NIB and I got well stocked up in .223 also.
I tried to tell everyone I knew and got poo-poo'd.
Prices these days are shocking!:ssad:

Jim, these guys are right on with the "minute of pie plate" accuracy of the Mini 14.
Another option for you:
Since they are not the long-distance shooters that an AR can be tweaked into, and the mags are not only pricier, but harder to find - why not grab an AK variant with a fixed stock if it's legal in your 'hood, as well as some Hungarian 20-round mags, and a couple cases of the cheapest-priced ammo you can find?
AK'll work all day long. It uses ammo which is now as cheap as .223 and can be found at any walmart or hardware store outside of the major metro areas, is REALLY durable and easy to maintain and is just dirt simple in mechanical operation.
Just an option of course.

Not all of them are Minute of Pie Plate.
My son Jim has a "Chief AJ Custom Mini-30" that is under 2 minute.
Custom Stock - Custom Trigger - Bedded BBl and what ever he did to it to make it shoot it is set up with a Scout Scope too. - - - - but out of the box most are Minute of Pie Plate.
The 30 shot mag thing would depend on how made the mag.
I don't believe any of the are actually Rugers.

Mike, I've heard of AJ. Mainly doing the 10-22 thing. I did not know he was tweaking the bigger rifles.
Under 2-minute, how much did that run him? As a cost-benefit thing, as with all esoterica?
It sounds like fun. Does the Mini 30 use an AK mag, or did they go stupid like with the Mini 14? Can AJ make the AK magazine work in such a rifle?

I'm pretty sure that Mini-30's are NOT compatible with AK mags.
My interest in the Mini-14 is more of a nostalgia for a rotating bolt military style rifle that costs a little less to buy and feed than an M1A, and shoots a better cartridge than my M1 carbine. It's a shame about the accuracy - I expected a little better of them.
I really want an M1A (and an FAL for that matter), but with my knife habit, I can only afford those kind of gun purchases every once in a while. Then there's the cost of .308 ammo to consider. At this stage, I have stocked up on .223 and purchased a good piston driven rifle (RObinson XCR), but I'm just not ready to heavily invest in another expensive caliber at the moment. I'd be more inclined to build a .22 cal AR with a Spikes dedicated upper, but that's another story for another thread......

I don't remember how much it was exactly I'm thinking it was about $700.00 but that was back in 97'
AJ did a couple of Guns for Jimmy and we did do a little trading for some knives.
The Mags Jimmy has are a selection of Rugers and aftermarkets.
He never has had an issue with any of them.

I always had trouble finding mags that would actually work, including Ruger mags
the hole in the mag that matched up with the post in the mag well seemed to always be off

I love my mini 14. It is as fun as it is awesome. never heard of all the issues and the accuracy problems till I looked on the net. I must have been lucky and got a good one. I does everything I ask and it is plenty accurate. I say buy one and if you don't like it sell it. I had to wait a long time to get mine. I only use the factory mags.
