This is really a question for the artists logging in here as Deadeyes Guest, but also those artists on JD. What types of materials do you use? What types of mediums? Painting, airbrushing, computer graphics, sculpture, hell, papier mache? Do you like to stick with traditional art/life studies, or do you like abstract art? Do you see art in everything, like say, the computer desk your computer is on? Do you see different trades as artisans, say, furniture makers or entrepreneur steel workers, or does art have to make a statement? What is your philosophy of art?

I paint, draw with pen and ink/pastels/pencils/charcoal. I do have an airbrush that needs to be fixed, Deadeye, I might take you up on that offer. I also manipulate photos and some of my art on Photoshop. I am trying my hand at woodcarving, and have been offered to learn knife making by the forging method. I enjoy most forms of art, but prefer traditional art. Figure studies, landscapes etc. I do however see the person that makes your furniture, whether in his garage or in a factory; the person who builds your house; the person who designs and builds your car, boat and motorcycle; the person who designs your cake for your kids birthday; etc, as artists. Maybe it would be better to call them artisans.

Deadeye's Guest can be either me or Xray - but it was set up so people who are actually in the gallery can interact with JD. So - when the show starts on December 3rd - anyone who is using the computer in the gallery will be Deadeye's Guest. This morning I was driving the guest to see what the forums look like without avatars & sigs.

Oh, I thought the show was running November 5th. Sorry. This was mainly for the artistes visiting the show, but for any Devils too. Just wanted to get some 411.

I use finely woven and pre-sized canvas from Belgium - it comes in 11 yd rolls, 88" wide. Very smooth canvas is used for portraits.

Here are my brushes and I use every one of them - and more, actually. You can see they range from very tiny to about 4" wide.

I am constantly looking for good brushes - boar bristles or sable. There are a lot of synthetic brushes available and they are good but they don't keep their shape as well as the natural bristles.

My favorite palette knives are old because the old German ones were so strong, flexible, and thin. Palette knives available today are not as flexible and the blade isn't strong - it bends or breaks. I just broke a palette knife I've had since the 60's and it made me cry because I don't think I'll be able to replace it. It was similar to the one in the center of this picture but the blade was a bit wider and didn't taper as much.
The only really good knife in this pic is the one in the middle. I'll start looking in yard sales to replace it. NYC Art Supply might have something close but I haven't yet found a good new one.

I use different mediums depending on what I'm doing and how fast it has to dry. There are wax mediums, liquin, different oils - different uses of paint required different mediums.
If you have specific questions about art supplies, I'll try to answer. There is just so much out there. For example - I use about 4 different kinds of white paint; Titanium based - Zinc based - White with Mica in it - and Lead based White. I use Old Holland for the lead based white - but other manufacturers for the other whites. I use Rembrant paints for the basic colors, but for some blues and other unique hues there is man in NY who hand mixes paint. I also have powdered pigments and sometimes mix my own.

One of the things I most treasure that i got from my late brother's house, who was an artist, is all his brushes.

My mom has them now in a vase on her coffee table like a floral arrangement.

Wow... a bouquet of his brushes... that's deep. Seriously. The time those things spent in his hands... The intensity of his thoughts, or total conversion or lack of thought, as he wielded them and turned to contemplation of his work... That's a nice memorial.
