I took the MSF course about a month and a half ago, picked up a cheap and clean '82 KZ750 and I've been trying to get out when I can. Unfortuanately, the job keeps me off of it during the week and the weather is starting to get shitty anyway. I'm going to attempt to ride some thru winter if I can. Anyone else ride?

In case it's not obvious enough, I'm trying like hell to get up my post count for these unbelievably gracious giveaways going on to celebrate the 2 year anniversary of JD!

Yep, I've got a VFR750 and I get out whenever I can, I used to be a courier in Aberdeen so the weather is just another one of those things. It just takes proper care and prep.

The big problem is old folk on a Sunday drive whose brains stopped taking change into account in 1971 when the fastest thing on the road was a Bonneville.

I have a 2001 Harley FXDX (A Dyna Super Glide Sport) in my garage. My bike is all black, with black White Bros. pipes. I had it custom painted at the Sturgis Rally, before we moved out to MA. It has a custom mixed House of Kolor green, tribal on the tank and fender. It starts dark, and fades to a lighter green. The othe half has a 2003 100th Anniversary Fatboy, with custom sheet metal. The Anniversary stuff is boxed up in the basement. Bert Ballowe did the paint on m y bike and the custom sheet metal on the Fatboy. This is what the Fatboy looks like: http://www.balloweartistry.com/HyperCart/PictureFrame.asp?Sku=ygraphictk

1998 BMW R1200C. Black. 35,000 miles (of course I was on a ship for 2 years - homeported on a 2 x 4 mile island, 120 miles from the mainland. Not a lot of miles put on those 2 years. Before that, I had a different 98 R1200C that in 14 months I put 24,000 miles on it.

I would recommend that you consider winterizing your bike and not riding it in Colorado in the winter. Snow, Ice, Sleet, and cold are not conducive to fun on a motorcycle. Wait till you have snow and ice, get on a bicycle, ride as fast as you can - lock the brakes up, oh wear a helmet even on the bike, concussions are not fun...

A Tip from a Cheapskate Bastard:

To stop Visors from steaming up, wipe the inside over with a freshly cut potato (requires 1 x potato, 1 x Ziplock bag and at least one knife) and let it dry naturally.

Alternatively, you can spend an arm and a leg on stupidly expensive little bottles of crap.:signhere:

Winters aren't as bad in the metro area as people think. When we do get snow, which isn't very often, it usually is all melted off the road by the next afternoon. Believe me, I have no plans to ride in that crap. We do get some nice days thru the winter though, enough for me to ride 3-4 times a month minimum.

I ride a 1990 FLHS ElectraGlide Sport. That model became the RoadKing in '93. It's a great bike, my baby. I recently had a top end job done. New cam, pipes, cylinders bored, carb re-jetted and slide, polished intake. All that shifted the power band up about 12 mph and gave considerable more oomph.

the Zukes are great bikes. they are the AK47s of the bike market, IMO. not too flashy, and not the prettiest but mass produced and work everytime, anywhere. cant ask for too much more than that.

some guy today on US-421 told me he could take me off the line on his 1200 Sportster. HAHA! i may only have 600cc's but I smoked him like grass. Given, I only weigh in at 142lbs and he weighed about 250lbs, plus the weight of his bike.

You have to shift too soon and the way the gears are wired is all different.Cruiser riders always saying they got soooo much torque on the low end, etc... PFFFT. :devilroll: Face it, cruisers are made to CRUISE, not race. SPort bikes are faster anyway you look at it. :ernie:

This shit is all in fun....i think you are a very well spoken young man and i think you will do well in the service...i sincerely believe that is the most admirable thing a young person can do with his life.

I have ridin since i was 9 years old and rode rice rockets for a good part of my life.

Harley Davidson is not just a motorcycle....for many it is a lifestyle it is like a Corvette...it symbolizes American made and a free lifestyle....i could have bought 10 top rice rockets with what i have into my 2 Harley's.

less than a hour ago i was talking to the wife about getting my grandson (8 months old ) his first Harley, i got my eye on a new sportster set up like a flat tracker.

The XR 750 ruled the mile....I remember when Kenny Roberts ran a mile race with a prototype TZ 750 2 stroke....that thing was to fuckin wicked for the dirt.

Enjoy guys .....as a wise man (stabber) once said....its not what you ride but that yur ridin.

The profits got to a US Company! Thats really what matters as far as that goes. People rationalize buying Toyota's all the time because they're assembled in the USA. That is simply a way of getting around tariffs. The profits go to a foreign company. The stock market crashed 350 points on Thursday. In part, because of talk of the Big Three tanking. People in this country need to wake up and buy US made goods when ever possible. I know that is not easy! But we all need to make a conscious effort. But that is not why I ride a Harley! Its 12.20 pm. I just got back from Hampton Beach. I had a great ride tonight. And I got the number of a pretty hot middle aged lady. She wants to go for a ride some time. I know shes just using me for my bike! I hate being used!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!:firedevil

OK where is the beach. I love riding by the beach. The air in your face is better when you are at the beach. Take the broad for a ride. Just make sure HUBBY - JOE doesnt find out. :deadevil:

Good call on the economical chat.. Its just hard to buy American made stuff because this nation exports all factory jobs to China!!!! because labor is cheap and illegal there. I get pissed thinking about it. it all boils down to this IMO... the american economy does NOT value American labor. period.:pissedevil:

I ride an 01 FLHTPI from the Yonkers PD. Put into service in April of 01 from Pinks HD downstate NY. This bike did many many escorts for 9-11 funerals. I call it Fat Bob cause of its tanks. I had the engine built to 96" and it will run all day at thruway speeds and beyond. It is smooth and comfortable and I like it. My first bike was a 80 FLH shovelhead that was also called Fat Bob. Never owned a rice burner and have never wanted to but that's just me. keepem sharp

Floorguy - Im sure you've never been sexier! :jdsmokin:

bigmark - you got that right about Harleys being a way of life. But the sad thing is from what I hear is that most people think that Harleys are all made in the USA. I have heard and cant swear to it as fact, but that alot of the bike you guys gloat about being AMERICAN made is actually imported and ASSEMBLED in the USA.

Unfortunately you are correct about some of the parts being made off shore because of manufacturing costs...if all the parts were made here as the days of old a stock Harley would cost about 80-90K.

What i said was " it symbolizes American made " as floorguy has mentioned...we must do our best....and i personally have always bought American....i presently own 2 HD's, Z71 silverado, Tahoe, and a 1972 chevrolet.

It is very unfortunate that America no longer owns America and part of that is because Americans did not support America by there purchases.

Maybe after you have served and shed some blood for your country if even a paper cut, you will also " Gloat " about owning a Harley.

Mark, your right on with your comment. Americans will go to Walmart ( I personally stay away from that store) so that they can save a buck on they're shampoo. Then they will bitch and moan because there are no jobs and gas is $4.00 a gallon. I know that we are in a world economy. But I personally think that if all Americans made a conscious effort to buy American goods when ever possible. This country and the people in it would be a lot better off in the long run!:firedevil

I agree with you Mark and others. However, the sad reality is that Americans are greedy with their money and financial holdings for the most part... Well, those of us who dont have a liberal expenditure at our immediate disposal. People are going to buy what is cheaper. I agree with the theory backing your stances on buying American-made things. But when people are dealing with things that involve their pocketbook, you can rest assured that they will go to the cheaper merchant, 9 times out of 10. I also think that this is going to manifest itself in the upcoming election. I think that alot of people that usually vote Republican are going to vote for Barrack Obama because of things that are affecting them as far as their pocketbooks are concerned. And I KNow Obama might be all talk and no bite as far as coming through on what he is saying he can do with gas prices, the mortgage crisis, predatory loan lenders, hiking interest rates, etc, but people have had enough - and I honestly think that they are going to vote their pocketbooks.

Enjoy guys .....as a wise man (stabber) once said....its not what you ride but that yur ridin.

That's a great quote guys! I don't discriminate. If you ride, we have something in common. I love anything with 2 wheels, but I prefer old skool chops. I'm not necessarily a Harley guy. In fact I prefer garage built chops and I'm not a walking free advertisement for HD motor company. I'm not a Harley hater (FTF), but it has become WAY too commercialized. I prefer not be be part of that.

I will say, I do like the Suzuki sports bikes. I especially like the flat black model shown in the first post. I wouldn't mind choppin one down into a street fighter type machine.

Brian I totally agree I hate both new softtails with a bunch of bolt ons and Busas with 50 pound chrome rims and rearview displays. I like garage built bikes that are fast and handle well whether it is a hardtail kick only shovel with split cases
and a lot of one off hand fabbed parts or a Ninja 10R with all the plastic tossed away and dirtbike bars and lower pegs. I actually like Harley parts for streetfighter parts because they are well made and people take off perfectly good ones for crappy aftermarket ones.

When it comes down to what is faster jap bikes or harleys of course a water cooled jap bike is going to be faster and by a LOT. Sure you can dump 30 grand into a Harley and it may be able to keep up off the line with a stock 10 R but that is not a fair comparison. Sure you can add a rocket motot to a lawnmower but it does not make lawnmowers faster than a Vette either.

I ride a Honda 919 right now and a Kawi 450 KFX sport quad. I will probably do a chopper project this winter probably a 1200 sporty hardtail.

I am considering a used Kawi Vulcan 800 though for a really cheap chopper. It has the softtail style frame and a good engine etc. I would do it right though ,flat black ,wire wheels sporty tank and everything that can possibly be removed would be. Rather than hide the rad I would get a nice aftermarket stainless one and nice airplane quality fittings. You can have a great relaible custom for 3 to 4 grand.

Good man! Keep it chopped!

"If it don't make it go fast, or stop fast, I take it off my bike. :bwah:

The older Ironhead sporty's make great choppers. I have one running and another one in progress. Both hardtails with the only bare neccesities. I have a front brake on my bar hopper, but I may even leave that off of my current project. If I do a front brake at all, I'm gonna go with one of those really small rotors.

Thanks Mark. I'm about to put a right hand jockey shift on it. The gear linkage is a transition year where they just ran a rod from the right side to the left. My 74 is a right side shift.

I'm gonna just remove the transfer rod and and run the jockey shift on the right with a left hand clutch. I'll probably end up puting a foot clutch on it too eventually.

Nah, its just anodized at the moment.

With the TL frame I actually coated it black for a while but got sick of that, then polished it but it was a pita to keep nice, so I sent it away and had it nickel plated. You might be able to tell its got a gold tinge to it now from the nickel. Very easy to keep shiny now, just a wipe over once in a while, good polish once a year or less.

Really recommend the plating, and being nickel it doesn't look exaclty like chrome.

Wow that TL is incredible. I would be thrilled with just some Ohlins internals for my stock 919 shocks. Carbon Fibre is sexy as hell and the nickel plating is a great idea way more interesting than chrome.

Sorry i missed the Revtech that is a real sleeper. 80 HP is not that impressive but the 80+ foot pounds of torque is really crazy fast.

I saw a great sporty with a huge big twin crammed into it. It was such a bad assed little bike. You had to really know your stuff to even notice it was not a unit tranny.

Thanks and good call on the exhaust. D&D Fatcat 2-1, std baffle. Deep and wicked sounding exhaust. Plus, it made a real difference in Tq and HP.
I installed a Thundermax tuner, the intake is from Wimmer, threw on some retardedly fat spark plug wires, had a custom Danny Gray seat made and pulled the rear foot pegs. Think I'm going to wait to dig deep into the motor until the factory warranty is over.

Which one do you wanna see ?
'91 XR 600 Honda , '91 WXE 260 Husqvarna , '02 TE 410 Husqvarna or '99 H.D. Nighttrain ?
DirtyShawn , I really dig the Katoom.
If I wasn't hooked on the Husky's since way back in the day , I'd have me one of those.
Or a Gas-Gas.
Or a Husaberg.
And I don't have any problem with Japanese bikes.... I have quite a bit of seat time on CRF's and YZF's as well as the older CR's and YZ's.
I do love the Honda CRF 450 for a lot of reasons , but there is something to be said for being the only kid on the block / trail to be straddling a cool machine.
Plus .......... when you buy a European dirt bike , you add gas and oil.
When you buy Japanese , you add bars , chain and sprockets , foot pegs , rims , gas and oil.
The XR is being rebuilt right now ................... fucking nephews ( again ) , but it was my training bike when I raced.
At 285 lbs. it was a tank , and after riding it , I would hop on the WXE ( 235 lbs. ) and toss it around like it was a mini.
This is the Harley.........bought new in '99 , after 11 miles , I cammed it , milled and ported the heads , ignition , carb , pipes.
Dropped 1" off the ass , new saddle and some other shiny shit.
After 30,000 miles , I kicked the head gaskets out of it , so I did a Rev Tech 110 incher with a six speed and open belt primary.
It was pretty fast as an 80 incher.
Now , it really pulls.
Don't stop or turn , but it will flat haul in a straight line.

like the Burt Monroe story very much,

we ( my compagnion and me ) where asked by the guys from Glendale HD, Ca

for us to dyno tune there bikes and help theme prepp theme..
my compagnion is on off the very few guys in the world who can really make a buell run very good and pull out every HP thats in there

i'm the grease monkey ;-)

here is wat i was doing to day ( some opictures for the gear head )

rebuild 2 engines, one needed a new crank ( piston tought the head due to rod bearing play ) , the other one a new gear box ( there was a gear binding after the dyno tune )

so what should have been a kick the tyres and mount the fairings,
is a working my ass off week to get the bike running good..

but so far where still are with in the planning..
still one bike to repair...strange electrical problem

there competing with 3 bikes,
speeds we geared the xb9 ( 1000 cc pushrod with full fairing ) for 150 mph ( tuned to 89 rwhp and geared for 180 mph )
for the buell 1125 R ( 1125 cc ) +/-170 mph ( tuned to 161 rwhp and geared for 22o mhp )
and the XBRR ( 1325 pushrod ) also +/- 170 mph ( no good tune yet )
if all goose well 3 records..

ps. you loose about 30 mhp on the salt due to not having traction

I rode a YZF 250 motocrosser last summer for a little bit.
Reminded me of the 125 two strokes quite a bit in the power band and pull.
Not quite the " on - off switch that two strokes...especially small bores are famous for , but pretty peaky.
A tad small for super motard I.M.O. , but the little bikes are so easy to throw around that it would make sense in an urban setting.
I think you'd be chasing Honda scooters unless you geared it once you hit the highway.
Un-ass the road tires and rims and you can really enjoy those little fuckers.
You'll still be chasing my TE 410 , but you'll be having fun while you are doing it.

When I ride through parking lots, I pass cars like they are standing still! :devil1:

Its fun, and Ive taken it from Mineola to Northport on LI. No problems, Im sure it can go all day and its actually very well made and thoughtfully designed and engineered.
Someday Id like to get a "real" bike, but for now, this was my first foray into the two wheeled world and Ive had this for 3 years now and take it to work whenever its nice out. It has a nice carry capacity under the seat and I actually rigged up a carrier on the foot board for my Boston Terrier.

Dont laugh..lol

I got a Kymco Vitality, it came with a 50cc motor that I had upgraded to a 70cc head, and added a technigas exhaust. If Im lucky and go down hill in a vacuum, I can get it up to 47 mph! sweeeeeeet!

(I know, its kinda teh ghey..hahahah)

You must really love it as that picture you took is better then one the company that makes them would use in a brochure.

When gas soars up to 10$ a gallon, you'll be having the last laugh.

Thanks Falcon! I will check that out. I have been using a pet carrier bag, and it works pretty well and is well vented and protected from the elements mostly.
That does look cool though!

I honestly cannot stop at a light without someone pulling up and rolling their window down to ask a question. One time this guy in a Harley pulled up next to me at a light and I look over at it and chuckle and say to him "Get a real bike!" He almost fell over with laughter :)

back from the salt,

2 new speed records in the pocket, on the little xb9 139,48 mph
and on the gorrilla XBRR 169mph and change
on the last day we finaly got the 1125 handeling problems out off the bike,
you can do only 2 run's a day , it is lining up and waiting for 4 hours in the blistering sun to get a run.
but where happy the handeling problems are gone, the bike was rolling ( like a boat ) 100 mph and up , and it became so scary the driver shut it down,

it was a hell off a 2 weeks,
salt everywhere. the bike's are fucked and really need a dunk in salt"a"way
the RR engine running with out a airfilter and all magnesium covers needs to be taken apart completely, before the clorine in the salt will start eating
everything basiclly all 3 bike need to be taken apart and hot bath, soaked, beed blasted and hot bath again to get the salt out off the pores off the aluminium

ps i'm a reall red neck now :madaddy:
the road trip from LA through nevada was fun, you guys have a very nice country

I just sorta came into a bike. A tenant left it in a warehouse he was NOT renting, and let his dog shit and piss all over the warehouse.

Bike is a Kawasaki Ninja, I think a 250, not sure. Don't know enough about them.

Anyway, cost of cleaning the warehouse up will be offset by the bike, which has a clean title and has not been registered since 2006 according to IL Sec State.

I'm going to have the atty do what we need to title it ourselves. Any Kawasaki Ninja guys know how I can check the displacement on this, the year, etc, so i can get an approximate value on this thing? It appears to be in very good shape, no scuffs, signs of being dropped, etc and I want to simply sell it.

Dude.........you need a springer front end for it.
Or not.........but a buddy of mine just called me today telling of one he is about to pick up for WAYYYYYYYYYYYY cheap.
$20.00 , and he says it is mint.
He is gonna either flip it or leave it leaning against a wall in his shop because it looks so cool.
The first thing I asked is " how long ? " and he wasn't sure , but not overly long.
I don't know what brake brackets it has or anything , but for that kind of money , who cares ?:bwah:

there are some sites where punching in the VIN will tell you the displacement and other details. need to know the exact model and year to even pull up the "value" on KBB.com.

the year will be on a sticker onthe frame, and part of the VIN.

the displacement will be on the outside of the cylinder(s).

not into Ninjas, but this stuff applies to almost any modern, production bike.

ther the 250 Ninja is a single, the 500 is a twin, and the 600 and up are all 4s... and ther's several models... so the number of cylinders alone won't tell you anything once you get to 4.
