I've got one set that my ex-wife Diane did.

Sheldon - you can buy the grips from Boone Trading Company in Washington State; they have cultured Ivory (ivory powder in resin) and real ivory for a lot of different guns - mainly Colt and some others. They offer blank grips or you can order some basic scrimshaw - they'd probably do custom scrim for a price. I know that Sandra Brady, one of the country's premier scrimshanders charges around $100 or so a square inch depending upon complexity.

Here's my grips, made for a Commander/Fullsized 1911 frame; I also have a set of unscrimmed grips for a subcompact 1911.
