I finally stepped up and bought a BIG (50 cubic feet) vault. I’ve spend *years* maneuvering around guns and taking them apart to keep everything in my small (but EXTREMELY-high-security) vault. The nice thing about ½ inch thick steel walls – is that it’ll keep the bad-guys out pretty much forever (unless they can tear it loose and cart it away to work on it). But it absolutely SUCKED having to keep my take-down .45-70 Winchester in 2-pieces..:ssad: The M1A had to be torn down as well..:deadevil:
The problem with ½ inch steel is that it gets WAY HEAVY even for a 25 cubic foot vault!!! I had my unit inspected by a knowledgeable friend and he laughed and told me that the only way into my vault involved using a “burning-bar” (which would take my house down around it) – so I should feel safe if the perps were going to commit suicide to get in….
The new 50-footer “could” be gotten into using drills & hardened cutting tools (because the shells on FP vaults aren’t as thick – but I (nor anyone else is ever gone long enough for that to happen). Such is life when families grow old… Good does indeed rise out of such things as having folks home all the time..
Back in the day, I used to cut loose Friday night on motorcycle rides that lasted 2 or 3 days and didn’t have a wife or crazy uncle in my home to guard things… Now that I’ve grown older, my needs (and uses) have become much more “defined”. The new 50-footer is fire tested to 90 minutes at 1200 degrees, which should give my local FD ample time to douse my house. It’s also located away from burnable items and walls – which could contribute heat in the event of a fire.
Having a great vault (or two) does wonders for my sense of personal security. I know my stuff will be here when I return!
My recent foray into the 1919a4’s (& all the associated support equipment) has prompted me to look into fire-proofing my existing 25 footer to keep all that steel happy – and out of the way of my more “refined” firearms. The 1919’s are story unto themselves… :madaddy:
Owning a vault is a *responsible* method of reducing the chances of local thugs accessing your guns – not to mention the sense of utter security you can feel when you leave your home to enjoy time away!! If you DON’T have one – PLEASE consider doing both yourself (and your community) the favor of locking down your firepower. Guns in the hands of those who do wrong, simply breed more restrictive laws that we must all deal with…
Check out the “Liberty Washington”. I’m happy with this company’s performance and was astounded how easily 2 guys (with Delrin skids) could move a 1200lb + vault, so have them use the 4 – concrete anchors your $375 deliver pays for!!! Also - make sure and buy the next size up - because you WILL grow into it (over the years)!
For the price of a couple 2 or 3 guns - you can enjoy the security I've described.. Oh yeah – this thing has a nicer paint-job than my CAR!
