The time has come to finally build the heirloom piece that will last for generations. I am going to build the ultimate barbecue gun in a 1911 (of course). A full custom build. I've been buying up bits and pieces over the years and I'm nearly done. I'm going to have it color case hardened and engraved. I want to design the engraving myself and I am having trouble finding a decent enough outline of a 1911 slide that I can blow up to actual size to layout my engraving design. I can't be the only one who has ever needed this with all of the sweet engraved customs I have seen over the years. I figured you guys could help. If you have or know where one is please post it here.

Thanks for the assist!

Mission Accomplished. Gordon may be along shortly to post a pic of his gorgeous Colt New Service 4-inch. But until then, BBQ gun gas been achieved.

A little photoshopping to clean the watermark off this would be perfect:

Oh yeah, here's my BBQ 1911. Though I have ivory Micarta grips on it now.

Thanks for the help guys. Those blueprint pages are perfect for what I need. I can have those Photoshopped in no time. I really appreciate the assist...exactly what I was looking for.

Nice Colt too...but I'm going full bore with this barbecue gun. Here is what started my barbecue gun saga. If you bought The Book of the M1911 two years ago you know it's story. Truly a work of art...simply an amazing firearm that belongs in a museum. I couldn't find pics of it anywhere so I pulled them from the mag. I think I posted them on here before when I was hunting for a smith for my build.

I've never seen a 1911 I thought was more beautiful than that baby. The piece I am looking to build is going to be a cross between that and custom 1911 from Wanted that Fox wielded.

I'm not looking to copy either...just draw inspiration from each. I figure somewhere between them I will come up with what I am looking for. My brother is an artist so I am going to get him to help me out with the design and engraving. It will have a Crux...Southern Cross theme of course.

I'm sure it will take awhile before this project is completed but one day the JD will be graced with pics of my own Ultimate Barbecue gun. Judging from the wait times for the smiths I looked into I am in for a long wait. I'm sure you guys will dig it.

Heirloom Precision - just google them and enjoy. This gun was built by another, who is no longer working with 1911s, sadly.

Enjoy your 1911 journey to perfection! It is fun.

I was actually admiring that just before I read this reply. Very nice. Heirloom Precision is definitely on the short list along with Turnbull. There are two areas why I see myself getting stuck trying to decide. The color case hardening and the engraving. I like the purples and blues better. The process used in the gun above is different from standard color case hardening. I do not know if I will be able to find someone to reproduce the process or even agree to do it. The process leaves the gun with a natural "oil treated finish" for lack of a better word...basically more resistant to corrosion. Where I leave thats a big deal. Its humid as hell where I live in Baltimore. Our weather sucks and I live right near the water. Its a full time job keeping my blued guns free from rust. I could soak them and keep them in the safe but where's the fun in that. Guns are made to go boom. The second part is the actual engraving. I'm worried about handing my masterpiece over to someone and trusting them to implement my vision.

All the hassle (read fun) is what will make the piece king of my collection. A gun worthy of passing along to my son.

+1

I honestly thought, by the title, that you were building one of those BBQ smokers in the shape of a gun. I've never heard of a BBQ gun.

It's a nice looking sidearm that you would wear to a BBQ , to show off to those in attendance . I believe started with Texas Rangers , etc. .

HEHEHEHEEHEHEE..I like that idea about the gun-shaped smoker. hankster has it exactly right. My currently barbecue gun a sweet all polymer M9 that is actually a butane torch used to light the grill! A BBQ gun is a masterpiece firearm you show off to your gun buddies. Always king of the collection...usually custom...usually heavily engraved...always beautiful and always expensive. More often than not they are 1911s or Colt Revolvers. Usually passed down through the generations. I'm sure there are more than a few guys out there rocking an Elvis or Hathcock owned gun. I originally heard the term on an episode of "The Unit". Carlito spent months building his and traded it away for some plane part to score a lady...the fool. Then I read an article in The GA Book of the 1911. That is where I pulled the pics of that 38 Super from. Every gun guy should have a barbecue gun...or at the very least want one. Oh...last but not least...you always shoot a barbecue gun. They can be safe queens but you need to squeeze off a few every few cookouts or so.

I guess it is a foreign concept to me, I don't own a single piece of jewelry, And never will.

if you go with a comp like the wanted gun get a threaded barrel comp the bushing comp doesn't affect recoil the way a good barrel comp does

The Texas Rangers usually wear the Sunday Go To Meeting attire when they testify in court; including their fanciest leather gear and a customized 1911.

You have to love the Texas Rangers...and Chuck Norris for that matter. He's this generations Duke. Let me take that back...nobody can be The Duke...but he's still pretty badass...

I've seen some of the custom Texas Ranger 1911s at Wilson's. They are definitely shooters worthy of their lineage.
