Hey guys,

what are your opinions on double stack 1911's? I'm turning 21 in august and am tryin to figure out which gun i'm gonna buy once i finally have the right to do so :devilfinger:

right now i'm leaning towards the para usa hi-cap 1911 in stainless finish. So what do you guys think? anybody have one? know of any issues?

I've got the Para Warthog that I like a lot and carry a bit...and a Glock 30 too.

The Para P12 just might be my favorite 1911....I`ve had one for close to 20 years, it`s been a great gun....fits my hand well, easy to get back on target for follow-up shots, accurate, no FTF hiccups, etc.

I got a P-14 in 1995 and gradually replaced everything with tuned GI steel fire control parts, made a beavertail with a bump to fit a 1911a1 hammer, custom slide stop and Wolf springs, Navidex thin grips and lastly went with King installed "Hard Ball" sights. Finally got it sighted in .:pissedevil: . Its no Gold Cup in accuracy but seems to digest any thing with out a burp (ramped barrel?) more accurately than I can hold it . The Aluminum frame keeps the weight around 32 Oz. With the +2 Mags and springs (8 of them!) it is my ideal fighting pistol!:ross:

Here is it with it's P-13 sister back in 1999 before some of the mods. BTW the P-13 is a good CCW gun! and will take the same mag hanging out a bit.

If you can grip one, then you're good to go. I had a P14. Shot it 3 times a week. The Para Ordnance I had was made in Canada.

I cannot speak for those made here in the USA.

if you want that capacity, the FN 45 and Glock 21 also have a high capacity.

If you're able to afford it, then by all means take the plunge.

I used a highly modified Para P-14 for USPSA action shooting and love this gun.
The weight helps with the guns recoil while shooting hot loads for USPSA, some add ons that help are Beavertail, frontstrap checkering, and good trigger job.

Cool, sounds like you guys have just sold me on one.

I got pretty big paws, so i'm not too worried about the width.

and now, just to stir the shit pot (dont worry, i'm not thinking about buying one of these monstrosities) got any opinions on this "double stack" :bwah:

I've used Para-Ordnance Hi Caps in IPSC/IDPA etc. competition for MANY years. The P-14 Limited I own is as accurate as any of the Colt Gold Cups I've had.

A few PO's I still own ;

Many opinions are on that gun in a separate thread.

I like double stack pistols because they tend to be thicker and help temper recoil. Para Ordnance for some strange reason are lower in price on the resale market than other guns of similar quality. Magazines run about $40-$50.

Are you committed to the 1911 platform? The CZ-97B is a pretty sweet .45 ACP pistol with a double-stack magazine (10 shot capacity) and the option of either cocked and locked carry or traditional DA/SA. The EAA Witness family is similar, but I have no experience with it.

Well, i'm not totally committed to the 1911 platform. I should preface that i do have a couple other handguns i've obtained through private sale in which i dont have to be 21. i have a gen 2 glock 17, a springfield xdm .40, and a magnum research baby desert eagle (walther p99 copy).

The main reason i'm leaning towards the 1911 is that its just different than any that i currently own or have shot in the past. I always hear such raving reviews of 1911's, so i thought why the hell not. My only qualm with 1911's in the past is the single stack mags that only give 7 or 8 shots, but when i found out some companies make double stack 1911's i was sold.

so from what i'm hearing so far, the double stack 1911's are pretty good quality and pretty reliable. thats about all i needed to hear.

Thanks for all the feedback and pix so far guys. The mighty JD, the only place to go for the important questions in life :manganr:

For a lot of people who like 1911's, part of the reason is how thin they are. Makes them easier to conceal.

makes sense. guess i dont have to worry about that though since i live in the only state that still doesnt allow concealed carry :devilroll:

Go to a gunshop and grab ahold of a single and double one after the other. I was very much sold on the Para until I held one, and then followed it up with a Kimber single stack. Bought the Kimber and never looked back. It's the way a 1911 was meant to be, IMHO.
