A friend gave me a piece of stainless rod 3ft x 1 in. Has any one ever forged this using a charcoal forge. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jim L.

No he didn't :ssad: . Does it help that it was used in elevators? One end does have the remnants of a yellow color code.

Jim,

Yellow codes are for 300 Series Stainless Steels.

You cannot harden 300 Series Steels

How can you make a knife from a steel that you cannot harden ?

You can make a Guard or a Pommel from it but not a blade.

What Mike said but you can forge it. Make something decorative that will last a lifetime.
