I'm not sure how many here work out on a regular basis, but for those that do I hope you understand where I'm coming from.
I don't care if you grunt , yell, whatever if your lifting heavy. Do your thing.
But FFS, quit throwing the damn barbells on the floor! There's an asshole in the gym that thinks it's ok to drop the damn things no matter what he doing- even just taking them off the rack. I don't know if he thinks it's cool, but it's pissing me off to the point i've told the gym owner.
Anyone else deal with the same crap ?

That does not bother me in the least. That is part of working out hard.
What bothers me are people talking and having long conversations while I am working out. Imagine lifting 500lb deadlift and trying to get mentally motivated while you here some BS talk. IMO that is very inconsderate and rude. Thses types of people only come in to do 3 or 4 excerises and spend most of their time chit chatting. They also look like shit.
Other things that bother me in the gym are people who talk LOUD and laugh LOUD. Same thing as talking, but more annoying. Even if they are on the other end of the gym and i am trying to do 405lb for 10 reps on the squat. I can hear one guy who has a voice ten times the octave of a normal person yelling and laughing non stop.
The third thing that bothers me is people who get to the water fountain right in front of me and fill up a 1/2 gallon of water while i am standing there for 2 months just wanting a sip inbetween hard sets. Please be considerate and let the person who does not have a water bottle go and get his sip before you fill up your barrel.
Fourth thing are old people. They sit on a machine and daydream for 10 minutes inbetween their sets. If you politly ask if you can work in with them while they are resting , they get indignant and storm off and never go come back to that exercise and tie up another machine (which has nothing to do with the proper order of bodyparts) for 15-20 minutes..
Fifth thing is on cardio machine. if you are on one and want to listen to your headset and someone with a cough comes and uses the treadmill/stairmaster right next to you and coughs 1x very 15 seconds is enough to drive you nuts.
Bottom line. If you are lifting hard you will sometimes drop weights on SOME excercises (like deadlifts, inline DB presses etc) that is what the rubber mats are for.
but please people STFU in the gym already and take your woman gossip outside. It is okay to chat a little inbetwen sets. But to sit there and continually talk w/o working out for a 15-30 minutes. Gimme a break! The gym is to work out. Not a social club@!

I've come to the conclusion over the years that the guys your referring to who drop the weights are:
1. Just Fucking Ignorant with no concern for others. This is also the same person who doesn't wipe a machine down after he sweats all over it.
2. Picking up way too much weight with terrible form to boot.
3. Letting everyone else in the gym behold how strong they are by doing the He-Man weight slam.
4. Angry at their Boss or significant other and taking it out on the weights.
5. Newbies who see others do it and some how think it's all part of their new "Sport"
This goes for your basic Bally's type general all round gym, I belong to a Bally's BTW, and have also been a Member of Gold's too.
Now, if you work out at a Gold's or a Powerhouse Gym than that's a little different, these places are more focused on hard core lifting. People there do tend to drop weights after a clean-Jerk or a power lift because putting the kind of weigh their lifting down in a controlled manner can cause an injury. ...So, in the end it really depends on the type of gym and the individual who's doing the dropping.

.... and the last thing pertains to those larger super clubs.
Those brown subs left in the jacuzzi and pool is getting old. I have seen that in clubs all over the nation and over the last 40+ years I have been working out and worked in clubs. I guess there is always some guy who has to pull his pants down and shit in the jacuzzi and later kiss his wife and kids when he gets home.

gyms an weights are meant to be used. if you work out in an atmosphere that promotes heavy lifting and people getting into shape you will see some weight dropping and less talking.
that is why i prefer the old school Rocky-type gyms with sweat and good old basic equipment and good hard rock music playing over the speakers to motivate you.

theres a big difference between being used ( deadlifts, etc) and abusing shit. Dropping dumbbells from waist level shows your an ignorant asshole, and a danger to other people in the gym. Oh, and rerack your fucking plates lazy bastards. There's usually 3 or 4 people who think they work out and people get to pick up behind them. I guess common courtesy isn't so common

I have been working out in gyms for the last 40 years . My first job was in a gym in Santa monica in 1977. Then I worked in the gym business managing mega chains for over 20 years. i never saw a person just drop dumbells from their waist for no reason.
I do see guys who drop them while seated on an incline bench. Usually because the heavy dumbells they can lift over head would reck havoc on their bicep tendons if they lowered them slowly. So instead they just allow them to drop so they don't injure they biceps tendons.
As far as saftey while dropping the weights. I would think one should be aware of their surroundings and when someone is doing a certain lift with max intensisty to stay clear until after they are done.
Unless you are one of those guys who walks in between the mirror and a person while they are doing a set to block the view. LOL!

Proper gym ettiquette would be to simply ask them if you can work in. They are not mind readers and don't know what you are waiting on.

Maybe because i grew up working out in the gyms in venice beach, Marina del rey and West L.A. I was indoctrinated differently..
In the real hardcore gyms they keep the dumbells tightened down so that when you drop them they don't get ruined.
Rubber mats are there for a reason.

Well said newbie,
I'm in and out of the gym in under 45 Min. these days. I know exactly what I want to. I almost never wait or work-in on a piece of equipment. I just jump to the next available piece of equipment that fits into my routine. If you try to use specific benches or machines in a specific order you'll be there all day.
But on nice days I'm on the Bicycle 9 out of 10 times.http://ms-people.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/bicycle.gif

Where to start:
Spitting
Not wiping down equipment
Wiping down equipment and leaving the paper towels etc behind
Hanging around in groups hogging equipment and never lifting a damn thing
Wearing your street/work clothes to work out then heading back out without a shower
Poor personal hygiene
Zero manners about other people's personal space
That's the tip of the ice berg. The shit I've seen people try and get away with in big commercial gyms is unreal. Shaving in the steam room, shitting in the showers, trying to wear their underwear in the hot tub. The list goes on and on.
For these reasons and more I workout in a couple of crossfit gyms that have a zero tolerance for any kind of bullshit. No contracts so if you fuck up or piss people off you're out.
I hate they leave their used juice syringes in the locker room. They can't do that shit at home?

BTW: It's a quality of life thing as I get older. I work out in that "Panzy" Gym because it's new, multi-level and has tall ceilings with huge windows all around the perimeter that let in huge amounts of sunlight.
I've grown tired of dank, dark basement gyms or gyms in warehouse type buildings with no or very little natural light, it's depressing. Unfortunately, this resembles the more "focused" gyms by me.

If a guy drops his weights if he's power lifting I've no problem with it, they gadda do it really cause a few hundred pounds ain't easy to set down... but if a guy is just picking them up off the rack, yeah, he's a dick.
And my only problems while working out are people in front of me at the water fountain and people using the equipement I want to use.
Thank the lord I work out at an athletes/power lifter gym. No Tv's aside from the one in the front which is perpetually on sports and only rock music playing. Without that place I'd still be a fat ass, so I'll always lift there... anyone who works out at Iron Works is there for the reason to workout, no bullshit "look out great I look"

If that pisses you off. You would go on a rampage if you trained at my old gym.
I used to be very dedicated to body building. For a while I was pretty fucking beefy. I used to work out at a gym that was very well known for training the biggest guys in the city. Most of the people that trained there were people that compete in body building shows. Some of them were really good people but most of them were a bunch of roided out jerk offs.
To sum it up easier.... Every fucking day there would be 300 pound guys in posing in the mirror in their underwear right in front of me as I was working out. There would also be guys obnoxiously screaming while working out. I would also have to listen to douche bag "alpha male" types bicker with each other regarding who has the bigger muscles or who was first in using a certain exercise machine. Lastly of course you would always hear barbells and bars being thrown on the floor. I do agree with you. After a while all that shit does get pretty annoying. :bwah:
Now, instead of lifting weights I just cycle often. I used to weigh 196 when I was working out, but I now weigh 155. Yeah, huge change in weight huh?

Everything has changed from the old days if the gyms are as you guys described them.
It was fun back then. Wait your turn for the incline bench if it's occupied. Do something else.
Guys and gals posing to check out if the routine is working was never a bother. WTF?
Weight gyms were co-ed, everyone knew who the steroid boys were, so expect silly shit from them.
The idea is to focus on your workout. You will not succeed if you do not. FOCUS. :ross:

I got that book when it first came out in the 70's and I must of read it 100x.
I really that he suggests people do free hand excersises (pushups-dips, bodyweight squats-linges, chins, headstand shoulder presses, etc) as a precursor before hitting the weights. if people followed his advice they would get in shape much quicker than if they start with weight training.
basics are always the best!

It totally bothers me. You should be able to set weight down
with out slamming them to the floor/rack.
It's even worse with dumbells. It's unsafe and it damages them
by bending them. I see them bent all the time because people
throw them to the floor after a set on a bench.
In my opinion people who do this just try to get attention.

I joined a gym ( Lifetime Fitness ) years ago to work on my cardio and core strength , with legs as a side benefit.
I was racing motorcycle enduros and took it seriously.
It was going to be a matter of which gym to join , but this was the first I went into.
They had the exercycles and some stair master things backed up to the railing on the second floor.......just above the front desk.
There were four spandex clad asses pumping away ( female , you queers ) and it was nearly enough to make me turgid.
I couldn't sign fast enough.:bwah::bwah:
It was a fashion show / meat market compared to most gyms.
But I mostly went there after work and was working 2nd. shift , so I missed out on most of the nonsense that took place when they were packed.
Far less eye candy , but far less dip shits too.

It totally bothers me. You should be able to set weight down
with out slamming them to the floor/rack.
It's even worse with dumbells. It's unsafe and it damages them
by bending them. I see them bent all the time because people
throw them to the floor after a set on a bench.

As before, I'll give you the dumbells, because there's no reason to slam those down... but I do got a lot of buddies who are power lifters and for some things it's just not possible to set the weights down easily, and if you got a couple sheets of plywood set down then why the hell not just drop it, it might slam, but it's not a big deal.
That said, me, I'll always work out at iron works(locally owned). my company is thinking about getting corporate rates for us installers at some chain place because it's a smart idea to have fit installers. Good idea, but I don't give a damn if they get us free memberships elsewhere. There's a little something called loyalty. I know for a fact that my gym membership was up at the beginning of november, when I went to renew it he said I was good till mid december. Plus he always gives me like 10-20% off protein and workout gear.

Let's here how you are gonna do this?:devilcorn:
Simple reallly... well, the theory is simple anyway. Cut out the refined sugars, half my breads, reduce my salt intake, and of course, no deep fried foods. Drink 1-2 cups of green tea a day to help boost metabolism and help the body filter out toxins. Drink more water, and add chia seed to my morning shake to replace the energy I'd get from the coca-cola I'd usually have in the morning(not to mention all the fibre, protein and the anti-oxidants in chia seed).
As well as follow my regular work out regiment... did I forget to mention I play floor hockey twice a week aside from my 1-2 mile run before every workout.

worst thing for me in dealing with a gym is unwiped benches or seats, and yes, people who hog a machine and chatter away and dont let anyone else use it. this isn't as much of a problem if the gym is large enough with enough machines though.
as for dropping weights, excessively it is annoying at most. i tend to think about myself more then who drops weights, after the first surprise you kind of know itll be happening a bit more often from the same fella.
i think the thing that bothers me the most of everything, is if im lifting weights, watching my form in the mirror minding my own business, and some idiot comes right next to me and does their own lift as well. seriously, there are TONS of areas you can do this but you have to do it this close to me? not safe friend. back off.

According to what it says on my Snapple bottle cap... 'After working out, it takes five hours for your body temperature to return to normal'. Just thought I'd pass that information along.

With all due respect Mr. G, I can't find that to be true.
A shower will cool you down quickly, cold drinks start a core temperature cool down immediately. Cold cloths on a couple of pulse points does the job also.
If a person is weak from overheating themselves, they have the wrong approach.

One thing that I never understood was when a chick was working out on the hip abductor machine and she would get all pissed off when I buried my face in her crotch. What's up with that?!?!?
