View Full Version : A possible brilliant idea

A few weeks back my friends and I were talking about movies and how many are shitty and so on and so forth. The conversation then went on to shitty low budget movies that make a fuckload at the box office and for some reason art films. Soon after the conversation drifted a lil to beer when an idea was born. Since the gov't loves to give out grants or perhaps film association things places my friends got the idea of making a movie of basically a guy drinking. The premise of course would be either drinking over one night or maybe a few, but it would say start somewhere then it would have the camera guy follow the drunk guy around all night as he travels from place to place drinkign and somehow winding up at home and wondering what happened the night before. Personally I thought the idea may have been lacking, or perhaps brilliant untill they decided that if they ever got bored enough to do it I would have to be the drunk... at that point I said it was the greatest idea ever... of course sunday the idea got brought up again so I'm thinking they just might actually try to get it done.

It all sounds so easy, doesn't it! I see a couple potential bumps in the road, the first one being that many people see drunks all the time for free and why would they want to pay to see one.

People see movies and art and many times think "I could do that" or "my 5 year old could do better than that." Or "I know what I like!"

But fine art is like any other discipline in that a lot of people know a little, but not really enough to produce a work of art except by accident. Art is similar to the study of any advanced discipline, including physics. Art has a language and a history that take years to learn. Physicists need the language of advanced mathematics to work in their field. Similarly, artists use their special language and personal skill to create. Most people find art more accessible than quantum theory, but they don't really understand the underlying principles of why a piece "works" anymore than they understand quantum theory.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for artists) most gov agencies giving grants hire people who know their shit - so getting money for an art grant is tough. Again, the "art" of grant application has its own language and idiosyncricies ...

Baltimore's Creative Alliance has a movie competition every year called CAmm Slamm. Participants are issued a prop on Friday afternoon and they have until Sunday to make a movie using that prop. The resulting movies are shown Sunday night in a theater to the public and voted on. The movie has to be under 10 minutes and it needs a sound tract, titles, and a "story." Xray and I and some of my friends competed one year - we didn't win but we had a lot of fun and found a sincere appreciation for movie making.

If you're serious about making a movie you should find similar movie making groups and or competitions near you. It's fun and will give you something to do while drunk or sober - AND you Absolutely will not believe the hot chicks you'll meet!

You could label it an educational film and sell it to schools and kids' organizations.

Ray Milland Lost Weekend
Nick Cage Leaving Las Vegas

It's been done.
Now if we have this drunk kidnapped by Ninja aliens and probed with a katana.......throw in a small fluffy talking animal and some gratuitous partial frontal nudity.......better yet.......get a brewery to tie on to the project and give free beer at the theater. NOW WE HAVE A HIT !:ernie:

Have your people call my people.

You know, I was thinking the same thing... of course you'd have to have the aftermath of the next morning for it to be educational... either way it would be funny.

Deadeye, it's moreo f a joke if anything, I'm just saying that if they try to do it then I would be up for it... pretty much I saw the same problems you do but I figure whatever, if they can swing it I'm up for it.

Tub man, I won't be doing a nick cage type of thing, I'm not trying to kill myself, nor would the objective be for me to die, and chances are I won't end up with a good looking chick like Elizabeth Shu
