Officials criticize 'Hooters for Neuters' Wed Jun 28, 7:09 AM ET

Several city officials on Tuesday sharply criticized a planned bikini contest to raise money for spaying pets, saying the "Hooters for Neuters" event was degrading to women.

Hosted by the Hooters restaurant chain, the July 13 fundraiser will donate money to the spay and neuter programs at Los Angeles Animal Services.

"Are we going backward here?" said City Controller Laura Chick. "We are a city with all kinds of progressive programs that empower women and end discrimination in the workplace, and now we're being connected with a Hooters bikini contest. It isn't right."

Councilwoman Jan Perry said the department's attempt to be creative in telling pet owners to sterilize their animals "crosses the line."

"I was surprised and amazed with the photograph on the flier, and I don't think it projects a good image for the city of Los Angeles," Perry said.

Animal Services Director Ed Boks apologized for making people upset, but said the "Charity Benefit Bikini Contest" would go on as scheduled.

"These people have gone out of their way in helping us, and I would hate to deny these businesses from helping to save the lives of animals in our shelters," Boks said.

Boks promised a more rigorous vetting process for future fundraisers.

The fundraiser is not city-sponsored, but a promoting flier is posted on the Animal Services Web site.

The original flier showed a bikini-clad woman, but the latest version shows a dog wearing a T-shirt that says "Hooters for Neuters."

Boks said that the owners of Hooters approached him about the fundraiser a month ago. He said the ads were made without consulting the department.

"When somebody steps up and says they want to help your agency raise money, your inclination is to say `Yes,'" Boks said. "But, we probably won't be involved in any future bikini contests."

I think L.A. would be the perfect place to do something like this. L.A. is the porn capital of the U.S. It's not porn, but hot chicks in bikinis, makes guys horny, then leads to guys buying porn = MUCHO MONEY for the cause!

I agree!:chuck:

I know the thread did'nt say anything about porn, & Hooters is a very nice family establishment.

(I think the chicks that work @ the Hooters in L.A. might because become stars one day tho)

tee heee

Laura CHICK? Change your name, honey, if you're gonna freak out over a bikini exhibition.

I actually studied with a very staunchly feminist mentor when I did my MA, and did lots of age/race/gender/orientation study subjects as part of my curriculum. There are all kinds of views on this kind of thing. Some think that women derive POWER from their sexual physicality as much as becoming "objectified."

Nobody's forcing anybody to watch or participate - get over it. "No comment" would have been a more dignified and appropriate comment if you don't like it.

Sociologists are very quick to say that you do not judge the actions and beliefs of another group of humans by your own preconceived set of notions and customs. A lot of the "multiculturalism" we have today - a very popular concept among the liberal set (in which I generally put myself) - is based on the concept that you live and let live, and that you accept that other cultural groups have their own values and cultural contexts for what they do and believe.

Somehow, those who embrace certain concepts (like an individual woman's rights to dignity, self determination, etc.) cannot put everything else into the same theoretical paradigm, and accept that some American subcultural groups find nothing wrong with wet tee shirt and bikini contests, etc.

And, in LA of all places ! ? ! ? C'mon !

Harmless fun, good cause, shut the fuck up.

More power to the 85 year old guy that's still posing. I'd do it.

Sometimes, I'd like to move back to Europe. Americans are too uptight, even the liberals.

I'd rather go gold panning with Dee.

We used to do our Vegas at the San Remo hotel - which is the one bought out by (and named changed to) Hooters. We made the decision to move our classes this year to another hotel, because so many of our clients have a problem with a "Hooters" invoice showing up on their paperwork to the accounting department. (No shit - for real.)

I can't comment because my niece worked at Hooters in Ft. Lauderdale to pay for college.

And X, she'll be tubing with us on Saturday, in case you want to shave or work out or something .... :bwah: :jdwink2: :madaddy:

My 86 year old mother had a Hooter's card and went there for lunch every Saturday (she liked their chicken wings) my sister and/or I would take her, and my 93 year old aunt started coming with us. My cousin, a stanch catholic kind of lady, got a little upset when I mentioned her mom liked Hooters ... "You took her WHERE ...!"

I have a gay friend who _loves_ Hooters. Again, it's all in the wings. :-D

Frankly, most Hooters I've been in don't really have hot waitresses. I think some Hooters employment directors suffer from a rare bone-marrow disease that makes them read the word "hot' as "as skinny as humanly possible". :jdvomit:
