How are those woods joined Mike?:wes:

Mike Stewart

The Tang Goes Through all of them and they are also Epoxied to each other.

Here is one Jimmy is building. All the Blocks are pre-cut, drilled mated up and fit with spacers before any epoxy is applied. The knife is then dry assembled and checked for fit.

http://barkriverknives.com/albums/2/Assembly_of_Segmented_Handle_knife.jpg

Once it is right--all the individual blocks are epoxied in place and the knife is put in a long clamp until it is totally set. The holes in the material are totally filled with epoxy.

Then it is hafted to shape. The blade is finished out last.

This knife will not have a Pommel. The Wood on this one is Amboynia Burl with Tulipwood Spacers.

I'll post a picture of it when Jimmy finishes it out.

He certainly does! How many man hours would you say go into a knife like that from start to finish?

Mike Stewart
06-28-2006, 06:42 PM
I never Figured it out per knife.

We track on Number of Man Hours per day against total daily production of the Whole Shop.

A Knife like that would take me at least 40 Minutes.:madaddy:

You can't count the time for the Epoxy to Dry.........................:spin:

I have been timed at 20 minutes on smaller ones.

If you come to the Grind-In sometime--I'll take a lot of the magic out of it for you.

This year we are starting with fully hardened Unground blanks again but these will be Stick Tangs. Last year we did Full Tangs.

Keep in mind that there are 14 of us--that includes Lesley , Jilly and Abby.

Doing 100 Knives in a day means a lot of work and knowing what you are doing.
