TUCSON(AP) -- Sheriff's deputies in Pima County discovered an empty casket with a military seal on the south side of Tucson Saturday.
Detectives believe the casket may have recently contained the remains of a military member, Deputy Dawn Barkman said Sunday.
"Obviously it had the smell and there was other evidence that it had been inhabited recently," Barkman said. Forensic investigators took DNA samples and are beginning efforts to try to find where the casket came from.
Deputies were called to a desert area near Interstate 10 around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after two people playing paintball found the casket, Barkman said. She said the casket was metallic silver with a U.S. Army insignia on it.
Deputies didn't find any signs of the body and put out a nationwide alert in hopes of learning more, Barkman said.
"We have a lot of cemeteries, but it could be from anywhere," Barkman said. "Right now we don't have any concrete information where it came from."
