View Full Version : *OFFICIAL* Insomnia cannot sleep night time post thread (mega merged)
What takes away your sleep? Shitty neighbours (been there). People that run generators until midnight and beyond (been there too).
BUT
to really lose sleep, you need a new puppy.
Half Lab, half mouth.
Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh.
This thing better be worth it later on because right now really sucks.
Combine this with work and I find myself here only on weekends.

Cool that you have yourself a new pup. Sucks about the sleep.
Dogs are worth it. You gonna use him as a retriever?

don't worry, in 6 years when it is almost full grown, and someone breaks into your house, gets bitten by the dog, sues you for all you are worth and ends up owning your house, then you will remember why you got the dog. :)

Cool, Wes! Just ignore his cries during the night or do like I always do... give in & let him in bed with you! :-D Just be ready to let him out every few hours + right after he's eaten. When you're gone during working hours... keep him in a room with a linoleum floor (easier to clean up mistakes)! Then when he gets older, he'll wake you up with his dreamin', snoring and farting! :D Good luck to you & the pooch! He got a 'real' name yet?

Way too funny!! I thought he was a Womb-ass, 1/2 jackass, 1/2 wombat!!
Anyway, Wes, your pup is kick ass looking!! Love the eyes and black fur!! Those eyes will make it hard to say NO!! Good luck and enjoy!!
Have you shown him how to lick his tools yet? Don't wait, it is harder to teach them that when they get older!! I have some pics of me training my dog if that would help!! :help:

I've been off for 2 months so far with a fubar'd wrist... slowly getting better but still no where fucking close to where it was a year ago.
so I spend all day on the computer or watching a dvd on my couch.
before I was taken off work by my doc I was up at 0400 or 0430hrs, and to bed around 0100ish. Off work at 1400hrs and I was free for the rest of the day.
now, I just have physio 3 times a week, around 90min between getting worked on and the gym. Spend the rest of my week in pain.
Look on the bright side; you're building character.

I enjoy early morning moon shadows and watching the colors come into this world. Morning is my time of inspiration and spirituality. It is quiet, beautiful and without interruptions.

I've always had a problem getting to sleep.... for as long as I can remember. Thus, I take ambien at night... Sometimes also a benedryl because my stupid ass is allergic to dogs and cats (we have 3 and 2 respectively). Even with that, I'll often lay in bed for a little bit, then nod off.
Tonight? Nope. I'm exhausted.... But if I lay down (and even sitting here right now), my arms (especially my left one) is twitching and feeling extremely restless.. If I'm doing something with it, it's generally ok... still restless, but not too twitchy. As soon as I stop, it feels likes it's gonna move on it's own...
Anyone have any tips? I'm gonna play a little game for a few and see if I can't tire it out a bit. :deadevil: :deadevil: :deadevil:

Honestly, it might sound weird/inappropriate, but orgasms work. All of your body's energy is shoved into those few moments; ever wonder why most dudes fall asleep afterwards?
Or, you can go to the drug store and grab a bottle of Melatonin. Take that, and a couple Benadryl. It's the only way I get any sleep at all. Good luck. Edit: The arm thing sounds like you're just laying the wrong way. Try different positions.

Try salting your food a little more (unless you eat fast food or other stuff with high salt content.)
Seriously, in warm weather and if you've been active, you might need some salt. A deficiency will make your arms and legs twitch and jump.

Well, since Syn was already asleep there was no orgasm to be had. Hadn't known about the salt thing, though... and I've been parched a little lately too, which someone told me wasn't necessarily a lack of water, but a lack of salt (especially if I'm drinking enough water). I'll have to try that one.
And I didn't have any Bailey's to drink, but it would have been nice. :P
What does everyone else do? (well, besides drunkenness. hehe) I'd like ideas for the next time this happens. I have a feeling it's gonna happen a lot for the next few weeks at least. :deadevil:

i would recommend Nembutal... nothing like Pentobarbital to just put you down...
also consider Seconal... Secobarbital will do you right... you WILL go to sleep...
Flunitrazepam is also very effective... known by it's brand name of Rohypnol... again you won't be sitting around thinking about sleeping for long...
nothing like 2mg of Alprazolam to end your insomnia worries... brand name Zanax...
a few suggestions...

I'm a high strung individual and basically have no "off" switch to speak of.... I've always needed something to relax or I toss and turn like crazy....
So I usually have a strong drink in the evening or enjoy some puffs off the peace pipe...On occasion I'll take a Halcion.....
The natural methods I've used are Melatonin, available at Wal-mart in the vitamin aisle... It comes in 3mg and 5 mg strengths(go for 5mg. imo). Your pharmacist or google can tell ya more about how it works on your body....
Now being hard to put down I fully stand behind my next suggestion, I'm not gonna bullshit myself especially when it comes to sleep....
I bought some great relaxation cds from Yang Martial Arts(YMMA) for sleep. These are not the run of the mill "relaxation cds"... trust me....
Once you get over the fact that your jamming asian music it is very easy to surrender to,the beauty in it is relaxing....Seriously these cds are like old friends to me....
I hope this helps....

Pioneer of applying Chinese music to natural therapy, Dr. Wang Xu-dong prescribes a musical remedy for a good night`s sleep.
Sleep is the fountainhead of vitality. However, loss of sleep can occur when one is under too much pressure. When that happens, the important thing is to find a way to relieve pressure and put your mind at ease.
This album is a marriage of music with the principles of Chinese medicine in treating sleeplessness. In the album one hears various Chinese musical instruments that produce ethereal and flowing sounds. The music, effortless and mellow, combined with rhythms that help calm the spirit, will help release all pressure, putting an end to long and sleepless nights.

Both onset and terminal insomnia suck. Onset is when you have a hard time getting to sleep at night, terminal is when you wake up too early and can't get back to sleep.
Another thing you will want to add is always waking up early and staying awake. After you've been up until late hours unable to sleep this suggestion is painful, because you're exhausted all day.
I'm also curious to see if you have a version of restless leg syndrome that affects your arms instead.
The insomnia connection adds these suggestions:
1. When you lay down to sleep, deepen and lengthen your breathing patterns -- shoot for five second inhales and five second exhales. You'll be taking 6 breathes per minute. This takes some practice but works nicely.
2. Take a deep breath and hold it. While holding your breathe, tense up the muscles throughout your entire body and hold both for 30 seconds. Exhale completely and relax. Take several relaxed breathes and repeat three times.
3. Choose any relaxing color (blue, green, yellow, etc). Place your hands on your stomach and imagine that you are expanding a colored balloon in your stomach. Exhale an insomnia/anxiety color (red, black, etc) through your mouth. Continue this for 5-10-50 times, whatever it takes. It is impossible to focus on your body/breath while entertaining thoughts.
4. Take a hot shower or bath before bed, or get up and do so if you are unable to fall asleep within 15 minutes.
5. Take some sleep food for the brain. Before going to bed eat 1 ounce of protein, 1 ounce of cheese and 5 grapes or the equivalent.
6. Get out of bed if you have not fallen asleep within 15 minutes. The brain is quite easily programmed. I don't want your brain to associate "bed" with "awake."
7. Once you're out of bed do not watch TV, get on the computer, listen to stimulating music, turn on a bunch of lights or do anything else that stimulates your brain into high gear.
8. Once out of bed do sit quietly, meditate on emptying the mind, listen to quiet, soothing music or do some "light" reading. The research shows that deep meditation is as restorative as sleep and takes less time than sleeping for 8 hours.
9. Soothing music via ear buds.
10. Make sure your bedroom is dark. Lights out!
11. Exercise regularly. Exercise does a fantastic job of regulating sleep cycles. The only catch here is do not exercise within two hours of bedtime, as this can activate mind and body systems that will keep you awake.
12. Drink Chamomile Tea an hour before bedtime and take Valerian root with it. If you open up your first bottle of Valerian root and it smells like rotten socks, don't throw it away, it's supposed to smell like that! Can you believe it!? ;-)
13. If worse comes to worst, consult a doctor. There are many effective medications used for sleep which can be prescribed by your doctor. Some of these include Ambien, Temazepam, Sonata, Remeron, Benadryl (non- prescription), Melatonin (Don't take this if you have Seasonal Affective Disorder) Trazadone and others.
14. Stay away from alcohol as a sleep aid. Many will argue that alcohol gets them to sleep, but brain wave studies show that once asleep, an individual does not reach the restorative level of sleep that results in feeling well rested in the morning.
Seriously, I would consult with your doctor about restless leg syndrome and find out if it can happen with other extremities as well.
Katwyld
05-30-2007, 05:40 PM
Ahhh, Valerian root... just the best smelling stuff, isn't it? heheh
Thanks for the ideas, folks... I don't think it's the restless leg thingy just because it doesn't happen often... just once in a while... and honestly, I'm taking enough medication for my liking, I don't want a doctor adding another that likely either won't work, or will give me weird side effects (I have some strange reactions to meds) :hairpull: :fenlore:
Ambien is VERY effective on me. As far as I'm concerned the bottle should carry the warning "Take laying down." It knocks me OUT!
Katwyld
05-30-2007, 10:38 PM
Yeah, the ambien usually does it for me, but last night... Just nothing doing...
Synghyn
05-30-2007, 10:59 PM
Yeah, we both take Ambien pretty regularly. I'm an insomniac from way back unfortunately, since I was a little kid. The Ambien works wonders for me, I'd go so far as to say it changed the way I live my life. I used to spend literally weeks at a time getting 3 or 4 hours sleep every couple days. Taking the Ambien I can pretty much count on a good nights sleep every night. That said, I've had days when I took the Ambien and it didn't help at all. Unfortunately it happens some times, fortunately, not often.
I'm a little bummed she didn't wake me up for the orgasm treatment though.
Doctor,Doctor give me the news, I got case of lovin' you, no pills gonna cure my ill. I got a bad case of lovin' youuuuuuu.

Valarian root should work...
I took Alluna for a while (5-6 months) a few years back.. went from 3hrs of sleep without an alarm to 6-7hrs and needing an alarm, after about 2-3 weeks of it. But at about a buck a day, it was getting pricy.
Walking 6-7km, coming home to a long hot shower was getting me about 5hrs a night without anything else.
My brain works hard enough now at work that I get home, eat and sleep... quite often I pop a movie in, 1/2 wake up a couple hours later to turn the TV off, and wake up with 7-8hrs of sleep by the time I'm done.

We did pick up melatonin, though, and that might have actually worked last night. Also took an ambien, but I was a lot more sleepy last night than I have been in a long time just taking the ambien. Gonna try just the melatonin tonight and see what happens.

I have terrible insomnia.
3:10am on the dot. Every freaking night. 1 to 2 hours before I can get back to sleep... if I'm lucky.
I have a jar of toffee cashews on the bedside table. Sugar is probably the last thing an insomniac should ingest, but they are good. Wash them down with Chamomile tea and I can usually drift off again for an hour or two before the alarm goes off.

Chamomile is the SHIT. I am a Celestial Seasonings collector. Their "tension tamer" has been the only thing keeping me from a clock tower a few times.
I think I'll go make a cup now....also I'm turning the alarm clock away from me tonight. Gonna see if that helps things.

Sorry Cadi,
The powers that be would not let me green you for the clock tower thing. You almost made Amaretto Cheesecake yogurt come out my nose. Please imagine you have been greened.
Melatonin, Vitamin D and Calcium pills chased with a warm milk at 10:30 at night and I get five hours of sleep. I used to be on a prescription but the side effects were worse than the sleep deprivation. If I get up I try and have a stock of bananas in the house.

I was told that chamomile tea works good for anxiety. Is there any truth to that? if so im gonna need a keg of that shit.
Yep. But it also has a sedative effect so you don't want to drink it when you have to stay up late or something.
A recent report in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry confirms that chamomile is an effective anti-inflammatory, sedative and ulcer-fighter. Research also suggests that chamomile may act as an antioxidant and antimicrobial.
There is also some new studies that show Chamomile tea might help diabetics from getting diabetic-related complications. As little as one to two cups a day has been shown to be preventative.
It's good stuff. I'm not a big proponent of pharmacueticals whenever avoidable so sleeping pills is not anything I would even consider. Chamomile is great tho. Valerian root is also good and can be found in some teas. It can cause side effects in some people though whereas Chamomile doesnt.

I was always a night owl, going to bed at midnight or later, and sleeping in until 8 or 9 AM. When I first started with Uncle Sam, I started getting up around 4AM, and going to bed around ten. Went to bed really late after Christmas, and have been struggling to get up before 5am lately.

I used to be a night owl, and I miss it! I don't know what it is, age, or whatever...but now I'm sleepy by 7:30 or 8:00. When I get in bed I'm lucky if it takes more than 5 minutes to fall asleep, so I miss all the good stuff on TV. I get up most mornings by 4:30. Sometimes on weekends I force myself to stay up like a big girl, and then I usually sleep in until 6 or so.

Looks like it's 0215hrs here... what's that tell yah?
Been trying to fix my file server for the last hour or so, might go to bed before it gets light out.
Usually I go to bed around 0200ish, up around 0600ish. The trick is being able to roll over and sleep more on weekends... wasn't out of bed till 1000 today and didn't actually do anything until noon.
But even when I work at 0700, I don't get there till shortly after and spend the first hour catching up online while I wake up (since the coffee at work is shit and I don't usually have the energy to make some before work).
The work at jobs 2 & 3 define how my week goes. Usually I end up working 0700-2200, 3-4 days a week... and my normal job of 0700-1530ish monday-friday.

Rozerem and Lunesta didn't work for me, either. It's just my fucking luck.

Couldn't sleep again last night. Med didn't kill the neck pain. Couldn't find a comfortable position to sleep. Got up at 5, cruised the kitchen. Saw a couple of black, over-ripe bananas and a bowl of walnuts that Mary Jan, our 85 year old neighbor brought us from her tree (I give her our garden snails that come out after a rain). So, I whipped up some banana bread. Had some of warm smeared with butter.

I've worked night shift for the last 20+ years.
The rest of the world is not geared for us creatures of the night, and tends to not mind scheduling routine things like doctor's appointments at what is for me, the middle of the night.
When I'm laid off (like now) I try to kinda keep on my night shift schedule, because I know when I go back, that's what I'll be working.
It's hard to do, because everyone else (including my dogs) is on day shift hours.
Screwed up sleep sucks alot.
Hope yours gets straightened out. You have my sympathy (but no real advice).

sleep is over-rated :signhere: I get 4hrs of sleep most nights, have been for the last 11 years. Nothing like going to bed at midnight, laying there for a while, and then realizing the alarm clock is going off at 0430 with what seems like 10minutes of sleep. valerian root & melatonin can get me up to 6hrs of sleep, but I typically do that on weekends.

When I go to bed the way it works is: My body rests; my mind stays active. Reading in bed usually helps put me to sleep. If I go to bed at 11pm, I'm usually still checking the clock every hour until about 5am. Then I doze until 7am - 8am. I used to be able to sleep at the drop of a hat... no more! I don't know what the answer is, GOV but I have noticed a glass of red wine just before bedtime gets me closer to dreamland. :ssmile:

cool and dark room
earplugs if some noise wakes you

Melatonin sometimes works well for me.

Have worked night shift for years by my choice. I sometimes use 3 mg. of melatonin taken about 30 minutes before sleep. Works for me.
Recent good studies confirm the importance of good deep sleep. The adult body needs 7 to 8 hours of sleep to accomplish the many important things it has to do e.g. release certain hormones to repair various body systems.
Research indicates that sleep is more important for preserving the immune system than even good diet, exercise, supplementation and so on. All are important but sleep is critical. One can survive for years on little sleep but ultimately a severe price is unavoidable.

I know cause of this..is why I have some of my health issues..and, 3rd shift.. after working them for over 20 years..it burns me out..runs my body down..cause I live the opposite life from others and those who work this shift know this!!
I have a Sleep # Bed...(which I hate) but, it wasn't cheap!
I invested in room darkening curtains which are the shit..it could be bright and sunny out you close them think its night time..
I am not a big fan of drinking milk plain!
Melatonin does nothing for me..
Chamomile Tea.. that tea especially when I'm sick..the other day I drank 3 cups of it and nothing..but, it is good! :yesman:
I am not one for noise when I am trying to sleep..

Gov,
I keep a volume with all the Sherlock Holmes stories in it at the bed. I have read all of them many times but I enjoy them and they put me to sleep very fast. Warm milk really helps as does counting backwards, picturing every number, starting at 100,000 and visualizing each number as it appears. It is sort of like looking at a speedometer going the wrong way. Just between you and me, an orgasm also takes the edge off very fast.
Hang tough, GOV!!

Otay ... when I can't sleep - which doesn't happen very often but when it does happen it is because my head is full of stuff - usually images from whatever I'm working on - but sometimes just problem solving - then I pick up a book on Art theory or any kind of History or something with a lot of facts. Haha ... and it puts me out - it sort of guides a restless mind into a chute ... one tunnel of thought (so all restless imagery is pushed aside)]and then the brain sez "I'm not gonna put up wit dis shit ... "
and voila! SleepyTime!

Ambien works but beware the first time you take it expect hallucinations of the 2rd degree. then it only works for a week and you develop a tolerance.
do some hard exercise at 4pm. that makes you tired and give you a chance for your metabolism to slow before bed.

Before taking ramelteon,
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to ramelteon, any other medications, or any of the ingredients in ramelteon tablets. Ask your pharmacist or check the Medication Guide for a list of the ingredients.
tell your doctor if you are taking fluvoxamine (Luvox). Your doctor will probably tell you not to take ramelteon while you are taking this medication.
tell your doctor and pharmacist what other prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking or plan to take. Be sure to mention any of the following: certain antifungals such as fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), and ketoconazole (Nizoral); cimetidine (Tagamet); clarithromycin (Biaxin, in Prevpac); fluoroquinolones including ciprofloxacin (Cipro, Proquin XR), gemifloxacin (Factive), levofloxacin (Levaquin), moxifloxacin (Avelox), norfloxacin (Noroxin), ofloxacin (Floxin), others; HIV protease inhibitors including indinavir (Crixivan), nelfinavir (Viracept), and ritonavir (Norvir, in Kaletra); medications for anxiety, pain or seizures; nefazodone; rifampin (Rifadin, in Rifamate, in Rifater, Rimactane); sedatives; other sleeping pills; ticlopidine (Ticlid); and tranquilizers. Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects. Many other medications may also interact with ramelteon, so be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking, even those that do not appear on this list.
tell your doctor if you have ever thought about killing yourself or planned or tried to do so, and if you have or have ever had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, damage to the lungs that makes breathing difficult) or other lung disease, sleep apnea (condition in which you briefly stop breathing many times during the night) or other breathing problems, depression, mental illness, or liver disease.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking ramelteon, call your doctor.
you should know that ramelteon may make you drowsy during the daytime. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
do not drink alcohol during your treatment with ramelteon. Alcohol can make the side effects of ramelteon worse.
you should know that some people who took ramelteon got out of bed and drove their cars, prepared and ate food, had sex, made phone calls, or were involved in other activities while partially asleep. After they woke up, these people were usually unable to remember what they had done. Call your doctor right away if you find out that you have been driving or doing anything else unusual while you were sleeping.
you should know that your mental health may change in unexpected ways while you are taking this medication. It is hard to tell if these changes are caused by ramelteon or if they are caused by physical or mental illnesses that you already have or suddenly develop. Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms: agitation, anxiety, frenzied or abnormally excited mood, hallucinations (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist), nightmares, memory problems, new or worsening depression, thinking about or trying to kill yourself, and any other changes in your usual thoughts, mood, or behavior. Be sure that your family knows which symptoms may be serious so that they can call the doctor if you are unable to seek treatment on your own.
